SFR Another drowning

Sorta fishing-related
On the Saturday opener while I was unloading my tube I got checked out by WDFW. I was reminded of having to carry a whistle along my life jacket. Luckily I'm only blocks from home and grabbed one off my other jackets. That would have sucked had I driven hundreds of miles to some far off water. BYW this one straps right nicely on my Chinook and stays out of the way. Only use the whistle half.

Good reminder about the whistle!

Likely you were actually wearing the Chinook since you're in a tube (and the pockets are so useful), but for inflatable PFDs they can also cite you for not wearing it while afloat. A few years back while fishing with a buddy in a canoe he got a warning citation from a WDFW officer because it was sitting on the bottom of the canoe.

Of course the only sensible practice is to wear a PFD at all times afloat.
 
A simple plastic whistle is a very good thing. Also retroflective tape should also be mentioned. If it is dark out, and the rescuers have lights,... that retroflective tape makes a world of difference. Even a powerful search light can only reach so far, but with retroflective tape, that distance is multiplied many times over. You can buy it at West Marine. Just like a sticker. You can put them on a PFD, float tube, boat hull etc. If you do buy some, It's fun to take a flashlight out at night and witness how powerful this stuff is.
 
The tape Jim is referring to is called SOLAS tape (Safety of Life At Sea) I think 3M makes its.

I've had some on both my fishing kayak and the paddle for over a decade and it's still strongly reflective. Also added some to my pfd when I replaced it since the part didn't have any in substantial quantity.

The adhesive is darn strong so be sure to place it correctly the first time.
 
I took @DFG advice and hung a whistle on my waders, too, in case I break myself wading.

Can I get the people in my neighborhood who walk at night in all black to use some of this? They’re eventually going to put a dent in my hood.

Have often thought the same thing. I have bicycle commuter living nearby who insists on riding totally blackout. Only thing that saved me from hitting him several times are the abundance of street lights around here.
