Split Shot

Al,
Where in the regs did you see you couldn’t use lead core line in out local saltwater?
Can’t say I’ve ever head that before.
Seems odd considering guys are using 12 lb lead downrigger balls and tossing lead buzz bombs and rotators……

Apparently (looking at Area 10 regs) those saltwater areas that are seasonally FF only (like Agate Pass) lead core line is prohibited. I suppose they're referring to trolling a fly with lead core line?

Interesting and thanks for pointing that out.
I never fish over there, so had no idea that there was a FF only area like that in the sound only during a specific time period. Seems kind of odd when they could just make it selective, catch and release.
The no lead core line is a bit odd as well. I wonder what they are trying to protect? Blackmouth, true cod???

Page 15 of WDFG pamphlet describes what constitutes a fly. Beads and metal wire are OK if integral part of fly, but weights are prohibited in FF only waters.

I suppose whether a swivel or tippet ring constitutes a 'weight' depends upon what side of the bed an enforcement officer got out of that morning, or whether you're acting like a dickhead.

And don't even bring up how 'pinched down' a barb must be. I've heard so smooth a business card can be run over it without snagging. Gotta say I've been checked for a license quite a few times but never on FF only water so they weren't interested in what gear I was using.
When I was still in Nebraska the game warden would run the fly through his/her shirt. If it pulled out a fiber it wasn't pinched down.

I have heard that is also the standard used in WA, but I have never had barbs checked.

I saw it for Agate pass, the other places I fish and you know where I fish don’t have that rule as far as I know.

Swivels? Tippet rings? Lead? I need a shower…

‘Mid fishing is part of my retirement plan. I’m looking forward to it in 20 years. ;)
