NFR EV's?

I'm the glass is half empty guy: Does anyone truly believe the state is going to repeal the gas tax if/when they implement the pay per mile tax? Roll another one.
Not even. This is WA state, where the gov't. has never seen a tax it doesn't absolutely love. My understanding is that the WA economy is doing so well that the state treasury is awash with money. Yet they want more. Because like a true blue 0.01 percenter, there is so such thing as having enough until you have it all.

They had an opportunity to temporarily void the tax back when other states were doing it because gas prices were rising like a trout in a blanket hatch. Did they? No. They stated plainly they wouldn't consider it because if they did temporarily void the tax, the "big oil" gas stations would just put the price right back where it was when the tax was there - which would add fuel to the record oil profits and appear to be anti climate change (giving big oil more money).

They will never drop the gas tax. Ever.

Honest question: How would you or anyone else suggest us EV owners pay our fair share for the roads? I think a simple odometer reading would be a good solution, but I also haven't thought too hard about it.
It's a good idea, but I just have no trust or faith in government to implement it honestly or without other nefarious intentions. If it was a simple odometer reading, say annually at deq to get your tags... they take your odometer and vehicle weight and add that to your annual state tax. But they must do away with the gas tax.. I have no idea how we would get out of state vehicle money.

I don't care. I won't be driving a gas vehicle.

A simple odometer reading would be fine. But that's not what is being proposed with the pay per mile tax.

I'll have an EV in the next couple years.
I imagine you'll care when everyone else is also driving an EV and there's no more money for WSDOT projects and road improvements.

We will all be dead when that day comes.
50+ yrs is my guess.

Salmo's way seems the most logical. Keep the gas tax for gas vehicles but reduce the gas tax according to the % of electric vehicles registered in the state. Odometer reading annually when you get your tags for electrics.

I'm think you misinterpreted my response. Why repeal the gas tax? If you are driving an electric you can pay by the mile. If you are driving gas, you pay the gas tax.

I suspect hybrids would have to pay by the mile, or a hybrid tax.

I don't think that it will be more than 15 years for their to be 50% non-gas or hybrids on the road. The average car age in the US is 11.5 yrs old.

For all the faults of the gas tax, like making gas stations be tax collectors for the state, it has been a pretty effective and fair way of apportioning the cost of roads to users. Heavy vehicles that cause more road wear and tear tend to use more gas and thereby pay more in taxes than lighter fuel efficient vehicles. How does pay per mile work when I drive out of state? And how does it collect money from out-of-state vehicles being driven on WA roads? Maybe it would make more sense to just keep the gas tax and develop an alternative taxing method for EVs. But following logic pathways can be so difficult . . .

Why, when we can have gas rigs paying both?

Probably Jay Inslee

Everyone pay a flat tax for up to so many miles. Pay an additional sliding scale tax based on vehicle mileage over XXXX miles.
Pay an additional sliding scale tax based on vehicle weight over XXXX lbs.
Pay an additional tax if you use studded tires or chains.
Get a tax credit if the vehicle has less than 4 wheels.

Rational, but an accounting and verification system nightmare. Honor system? 🤣
