What was your moment that inspired your transition to flyfishing?

Related to this. What was the first thing you ever caught with a fly rod.

For me it was a chicken.

My mom knew I loved fishing and bought me a fly rod/reel/line combo she found at a thrift store.

I had no fucking idea how to rig it for fishing with no other fly fisherman in my family/friend inner circle as a 12 year old. So, I promptly tied that fly line into a cinch loop that caught the rooster that had escaped from my parents coop. A little feed in the loop and a buddy and I hiding behind some garbage cans and whamo, chicken on the “fly”.

So, am I the first angler in history to catch their first dozen or so salty kings on a fly while at the same time having their first fly caught species be a Rhode Island Red?

I think so. I’ll make sure that ends up in my obituary or maybe even my gravestone…

I started to go to MT, Glacier National Park, to river raft and camp in Bear country. Took my dad's old Wright & McGill 8wt.. thought it was a 5wt.. had a 5wt line on it but caught a few fish in the mornings and/or evenings.

The rest is history! 25 plus rods now.. I own a fly shop in my garage and bedroom.. living room too.. never looked back.. don't regret one second of it! It's the most fun you can have with your clothes on! Seriously!

I've never transitioned. I did become fly fishing at about 10 years old. But won't ever give up gear. I prefer to be a fisherman or angler who uses different types of rods depending on for a specific times or simply over what my mind wants me to use.
