What happened to bird hunting in Yakima?

It is sad. Agriculture practices, lack of public land (compared to other states), and pressure are all culprits. Washington is a lot of boot tread with small results. That's why I'm off to Montana next week. Even the tough years are impressive.
 
I have too much to say, to only say that it’s sad. I hung up my local upland hunting desires 10 years ago. Glad I had such a blast from 1994-2004. We had some amazing days over our Gordon Setters.
 
The Washington State Legislature focused on expanding the Western Washington bird release program into Eastern Washington, and on promoting the “Pheasant Preserve” private hunting program statewide. They decimated the wild bird program. That coupled with ag practices minimizing cover and food, and a multi year drought, and private landholders being victimized by slob hunters, is basically rendering it impossible for anyone to have a reasonable expectation of success on public land or frankly private land in Washington. I grew up with this, trained my son and daughter to hunt this way, and now it’s a waste of time and energy to even bring it up with my grandchildren. At $50 bucks a bird at a pheasant preserve, I’m priced out. And to equate a pheasant preserve experience to a wild bird hunt is bullshit.

And before you say it, telling me that if I just hike more there’s lots of birds, that’s bullshit too. For the last 10 years I’ve been quite happy to harvest one or two wild birds, and I’ve been doing this a while.

The Legislature, the Game Commission, and WDFW have killed upland bird hunting in Washington. Period. I’ve bought my last hunting license in Washington. My kids did so 10 years ago. And 5 years from now, it’ll be gone forever.

Who’s gonna vote to protect your gun rights when there’s no reason to own one?
