Tracking sales and deals on meat

I heard the Mrs say something about steamers the other day…most of the family is not big on meat. I have found it good to watch prices at Costco and break out the vacuum sealer. I’ve got a few NY strips still in the freezer.
For the Spring Fling I’m suggesting the gang get their steaks at Owen’s in Riverside on the way up to the house. Great folks and grass fed beef. I will probably stock up on some cuts and freeze them.

I love boneless leg of lamb I cook on the BBQ. Marinaded with wine and Mediterranean herbs/spices for at least a day, then slow roasted in the BBQ.

With several members of the extended family no longer around and changing dietary restrictions, lamb is out for the foreseeable future. I will miss Shepherd's pie the next day too.

So lasagna it is. Always better the next day too.

Weekly ads are out.

QFC is showing $11.39/lb. for Certified Angus Beef and probably where I'll get mine. Special occasion, quality, previous experience, former employer loyalty.

Safeway is showing a hard to believe $4.97/lb. with coupon and $25 spend. I don't and won't shop there but that's less than ground beef these days. Grade is Choice, not CAB and it says 'Imported'.

Albertson's is a similar $5.47/lb. with coupon and $50 spend. Grade is Choice.

Costco a couple of days age was around $15/lb. for Choice grade but didn't see much marbling on the one's they had out.

US Foods Chef Store is $10.29/lb. grade unspecified and you gotta buy the whole rib. $15.29/lb. for 'Star Ranch Angus'.

Didn't bother looking at Whole Foods or PCC. If you can afford to shop there you don't care what the price is.

Happy shopping and let me know if you'd like my cardiologist's number!

With this talk of lamb - if anyone has some good recipes I'd be glad to hear them.

We just started to dabble in sheep and will have our first lambs in the spring to butcher and process next fall. Working now on getting a walk in cooler in the barn so I can hang and process myself and end up saving money long term (maybe? Probably not?)

Been a beef guy my whole life but sheep work out better for our smaller 3 acre pasture, and with the cost of meat what it is we're trying to raise our own. We've been doing chickens and turkeys the last several years and it works out to just under $2 a lb for organic meat raised by us, so we're moving to the next level.

In the greater Seattle area check your local large Asian grocer, Asian Family Market etc, they often have great pricing on meat. Like the Chef'Store the quality is all over the place. THE big one, Uwajimaya, has exceptional quality but the pricing is brutal.

Whole Foods via Prime just posted 20-30% prime rib eye, leg of lamb, and ham. They might be priced into normalcy with that "discount"

I like Braised Lamb shanks, Shepherds Pie, roasted leg of Lamb, rack of Lamb.
But my favorite was a stuffed boneless leg of Lamb i did for Christmas dinner last year!

Don't know if it's a deal or not on rib roast, but I'm now doing the shopping. Safeway had this listed Wednesday, and I had them make up 1/2" steaks. The bones are still kinda meaty too.

I didn't realize it but the roast at Safeway was $4.99 after I had entered the phone number at check out. After seeing the receipt my wife went back and got a big one cut into 3 roast for $4.99 at checkout.

could have saved another .02/lb if you used the digital coupon. (sorry, being a smart ass)
I picked up a 6lb roast for 30.00.
can't beat that!

I don't mind smart-ass comments.
And I think shopping is an art. I got a lot to learn since it seems to be becoming my task. Don't mind tips either.

FYI the meat discounts, as well as 'Mgrs. Specials' on close dated stuff (never outdated) in all departments are supposed to be completed by 9:00 AM. This was a QFC and Fred Meyer policy, assume it goes for Safeway and Albertsons. Associates are directed daily toward specific units coming up on sell by or expiration dates by their handhelds. Pretty cool program actually and speaks to the razor thin margins in grocery retail. Rather sell it at a discount than throw it away and the dates are always conservative.

Anyway, get there early!
