SFR The Real ID Requirements Are Just Around The Corner

Sorta fishing-related
You said "I've been surprised at the number of people that refuse to get one."

I, like others, refuse to go get and pay for a "Real ID" years ahead of the expiration date of my regular driver's licence, because my PP card serves the same function.
That's all. It's not a principled stand against "surveillance" 😆
This…

I’ll leave this there as other reasons not to rush to get a new DL…. Straight from the Smurfs themselves… all sorts of treasures.

Adult passengers 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel.

  • Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
  • State-issued Enhanced Driver's License
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Permanent resident card
  • Border crossing card
  • An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs).
  • HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport
  • Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transportation worker identification credential
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
  • Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

Something to think about when traveling to Canada is that if you are hurt and want to medivac to the US where your insurance works, you will need to have a passport. No passport, no international flight to the US. When we go up there to ski we always take a passport for that reason. We both have realID, no reason not to.

I’m surprised the TWIC card is not on the list. That was an ordeal to go through the very first time. (Now that I think of it …they have privatized the selling/distribution of the TWIC card for better national security 😉).

I went and did everything required to get the Enhanced DL last Friday. It didn't take more than about 10 minutes and whatever the cost was, it was low enough that I didn't worry about it.

I travel a lot for work, and always use my passport for flying (just out of habit) but don't want to risk not having a DL that works for flying in case I lose or forget my passport when leaving for a trip.

One other consideration, at least for people that fly a lot, is that you lose your passport for several weeks when renewing it. That time is coming up for me, so want the Real ID in hand before sending in my passport for renewal.

I carry a wallet size passport so until it expires, I figure it should be good enough for ID.

Passport stays in 1 of 3 places. A.) same work bag B.) zippered uniform internal breast pocket C.) hotel safe.

HEREBY these requirements don't apply to me!!!!! Whereunforth I'll GET IN if I say so!!! Ain't nothing one stopping ME. if I roll up I'm just saying "LET ME IN OR IM GONNA ISSUE A THREAT!!!!"

BY DEFAULT!!!

One reason not to get a Real ID.

I refuse to give my Social Security number to state fish and wildlife agencies when I get a non-resident fishing license. They keep getting hacked and SS numbers sold.

I just give them my Canadian Social Insurance number. At which point they ask why I have a Washington Drivers License.

And my answer, just because I live in Washington doesn't mean I am a legal resident. If you look at my drivers license, it is NOT a ID document.

Every state, has accepted my explanation.

Notice that I never lied....the statement "just because I live in Washington state and have a drivers license, doesn't necessarily mean I am a legal resident" is completely true

I’m no looker, but they made me look like Picasso painted Sloth from Goonies. My hair, face, and eyes don’t look like that in real life. They also made my beard about 2” shorter. Photo from earlier that day. Admittedly the hair suffered during the 2 hours I was in line at the nexus office:

Anyone know if there’s a reason for them distorting my face, lowering an eye, changing my hair, and trimming my beard?

Also, who thought ID was a good abbreviation for “identification”? Ok, so the I stands for “I”, and the D stands for “dentification”.

Ok, the deadline has passed. I'm one of millions who didn't get it yet. Honest, after reading headlines today, meh....

Somewhere there is a CIA agent that looks close to you. They just wanted to "fix" your picture to better reflect the ID he will be using.

Being filmed quite a few times each and every day, with home ring cameras, business security cameras, dash cams, government cameras, etc etc, we are probably on film 50 to 100 times a day.

Still some have no problem stepping out their door in their pajamas each and every day and going about their daily business. Lol.
