Official Beach Rod Thread

I've given my new TFO Axiom II-X 6wt some testing and so far I like it for $199 but I'm still thinking the Echo 84b is the solid new favorite with the Boost Blue in 2nd spot. Axiom II-X seems a bit more sluggish/heavy than the Boost Blue. I have to slow down my cadence a lot more with the Axiom II-X which may not be the worst thing, but still...

Great report, helpful. What line are you throwing?

Sounds like it makes for a decent back up rod or one to loan out to a friend ill equipped? I purchased the 11 weight off Sierra for Florida. I need to go cast it and see if 11 or 12 weight line is better?

Currently I'm using an Arctic Silver Compact 1.0 floater 6wt on the Axiom II-X. The AS compact (and more recently the compact 2.0) is my benchmark line.

I also have an OBS F/H/I 6wt that I like. Haven't tried it on the Axiom II-X yet but it works well on the BB and 84b.

My first experience with the Axiom II-X was as a 7wt in SF bay with 7wt OBS. It worked well enough there but something about the flex seemed mushy in the midsection compared to the 6wt and 8wt BB that I was comparing it to.

My choice for any given day on the beach is species/conditions/beach dependent. For example, I fish 7’s for coho most days but prefer a 6 if fishing conditions or a beach requiring an intermediate line versus an I/3 or I/5. I’ve also moved away from 9’6” rods the last few years.

Coho
7 weight 9 ft Scott Centric
7 weight 9 ft G Loomis IMX Pro
6 weight 9 ft Sage Maverick
7 weight 9 ft 6 in Sage One
6 weight 9 ft 6 in Sage Ignitor

SRC
6 weight 9 ft Scott Centric
6 weight 9 ft Sage Maverick
6 weight 9 ft Sage Motive
6 weight 9 ft 6 in Scott Radian

Chum
7 weight 9 ft G Loomis IMX Pro
8 weight 9 ft Redington Predator
9 weight 9 ft G Loomis IMX Pro

Here’s my lineup from light to heavy. The fast Air 2 Max is where the line between src and coho is blurred, it’s used for both.

Scott Radian 9’ 5wt

Hardy NSX SR 9’ 5wt. This 6 piece was for traveling purposes but it’s a lot of fun to cast and fish with I use it regularly in the Sound and lakes too.

Scott Centric 9’ 6wt

Scott Meridian 9’ 6wt

Winston Air 2 Max 9’ 6wt

Scott Centric 9’ 7wt

Scott Meridian 9’ 8wt for chums

G Loomis Nrx+ 9’ 9wt for chums, more of a back up.

I don't get to the beach much these days. I usually carry these setups when I do go.

From the beach or Commander-

7wt- Redington Pursuit 790-4 and WF7F SA Frequency Boost on Redington CDL 7/8

Silvers-
7wt- Redington Pursuit 790-4 and WF7S S.A. Sonar Hover/2/4 on Lamson Remix 7+
And a floater- WF7F SA Frequency Boost on Redington CDL 7/8

Chum-
8wt- Fly Project- Project One 890-4 and WF9F AirFlo Super Dri Xceed on Allen Alpha 4
And a sinker- WF8S SA Sonar Titan I/3/6 on Sage 3210

Beach cutts & residents on a windy day:
6wt- Redington RS4 9064 and WF6I SA Sonar Titan full int on Lamson Remix 5+
6wt- Redington Pursuit 690-4 and WF6F SA GPX on Cortland LTD LA90

Beach cutts & residents no wind:
5wt- G Loomis IMX 590-2 and OPST Commando Smooth 200gr and intermediate poly on Cortland LTD 80
On those rare blissful calm late winter/early spring days when they're sipping amphipods I'll break out the little guy-
4wt- Fenwick Aetos 480-4 and WF4F SA Frequency Boost on the Korean Cahill 4/5 So fun!

If in the boat-
6wt- Redington RS4 9064 and WF6I SA Sonar Titan full intermediate on Lamson Remix 5+
6wt- Redington Pursuit 690-4 and WF6F SA GPX on Cortland LTD LA90
7wt- Redington Pursuit 790-4 and WF7S S.A. Sonar Hover/2/4 on Lamson Remix 7+
- WF7F SA Frequency Boost on Redington CDL 7/8
If chum season then also carry these-

8wt- Fenwick Aetos 908-4 and WF8F SA MPX Stealth on Lamson Liquid 7+

If I could only carry 1 it would be the Redington RS4 9064 and WF6I SA Sonar Titan full int on Lamson Remix 5+. It's a bomber!
