looking for approval to host / manage the fly tying contest each month.

Lol - sitting out on the back deck and one just ran into my head! My first thought was ""Ooh! Better bring a couple stimis to the beach tomorrow "

Still no big flights of termites yet this year here at my place, which is unusual. It’s getting late in the year compared to past years but maybe last nights rain will get them going. I did see one down on a beach this weekend. If they don’t show up soon, a ESA listing may be warranted. 😉
Anyone else see much in the way of termite flights in your area?

Nope...
Just a couple last time it was in the 90's, maybe this weekend as it's back to hot dry weather.
Seems odd, but very few this year.
Perhaps like tent caterpillars there is a boom/ bust population cycle with them.
A few years ago we had multiple very large hatches.

“Well, we can consider each colony’s unique set of alleles (its genotype) to be like a coat of arms that communicates family membership. Within a colony, individual termites may have slightly different combinations of alleles, but on the whole they are similar and thus kin. That is, they share the same coat of arms. Remove the unique features of the coat, or unique alleles from the genome, and they fail to differentiate. Instead of two clans warring, they buddy up and join forces.”

“In this evolutionary paradox: the rarest alleles are the most successful, and by virtue of this suc- cess, become more common in the gene pool. Once common, the same allele becomes less effective and, as a consequence, more rare. This cycle of bust to boom again, is a pattern that is typical of what geneticists would call ‘balancing selection’”

Neat read while I take a number 2 at work.

I was camped right on HC last night, and a bunch showed up right at dusk, but disappeared when it started to rain lightly. None hit the water that I could see
