Non-Fly July 20th meat haul

Just curious. That yellowtail rockfish looks it might actually be a widow rockfish, a.k.a "brown bomber". Not nit picking. Trying to ID the bazillion varieties of rockfish can be challenging, and interesting.
They're verrrry similar looking fish. I've mixed them up before. Thankfully, both are legal to keep so don't matter much. The two I really struggle to tell apart inshore are quillbacks vs coppers.

On this one, there's black in the fins, which widows don't usually have. Yellowtails also tend to be a bit bigger. don't think I've ever caught a widow over like 15"

Fond memories of fishing for black cod with my Dad in the late 60's.

There's a spot out of Birch Bay north of Bellingham where juvenile black cod (and dogfish) congregated in tide rips, shallow enough to catch on mooching gear. Nothing bigger than 3 or 4# as I remember, but seemed huge compared to the tiny cutts in our creek. Dad just beer battered and deep fried. Simple but delicious.
