A short but satisfying outing

On Friday Krusty and I continued our tour of general regs lakes, this one up a steep mountain road that has been reduced to goat trail status by the recent rains. Formerly negotiable by some 2wd vehicles it is pretty much AWD/4WD now with some ruts between 12''-15''. No fun if you make a mistake.

Predictably we had the lake all to ourselves. Despite predictions to the contrary, the wind was up and we had to fight it all day. But the fishing was as we expected and we caught a s--tload of fish. A lot of small fish on floating or intermediate lines at first fishing close to the bank. After lunch we geared up with some faster sinking lines and fished deeper water. Here the fish were a little bigger and the bite was nonstop. Cutthroat are masters at shaking the hook and these were no exception. At one point I hooked and fought 17 fish in a row but only got 7 of them to the net. Hooks were dead sharp and I tried every trick I know t keep them on but lost more than I landed.

A fun day but a short one as we caught so many fish we just got weary, especially after fighting the wind. A brief hiatus coming up as we wait for the Fourth of July pig to go through the python. Then back to some high lakes for more cutties and by then some stream fishing should be possible as the runoff fades. Summer fun is ramping up on the frozen tundra!

Despite the wind, a lovely day. The larger CT were hanging deep...at 30' to 40' feet with virtual clouds of fish marking on my finder, I had nearly continuous strikes on a boobie while winddrifting down the lake, but great difficulty getting very many up to my kayak, though the ones I managed to net were fat gorgeous fish.
