Non-Fly 2024 Summer Salmon

Fished A10 this weekend. There are still some decent fish out there.
Those are some chunky fish!

It will be interesting to see the final coho numbers from the hatcheries and the catch reports for this year. Seems to me like it was a huge run that showed up early and kept on going later than usual. Fishing in September was stupid easy - if next year is like the previous 10 years, there are going to be some newly hatched “experts” who are going to find themselves brought back to earth with a thump.

Only downside was that most of the fish seemed to be offshore and deep down, which didn’t make for a good fly fishing season.

I always like to look at the hatchery chinook returns, especially at hatcheries facilities where the fish would have swam through MA 9 & 10 to get there. I understand all the constraints on chinook, but there is generally a ton of missed opportunities to harvest those fish given the measly seasons and quotas in those two marine areas. That's even after what gets harvested outside the sound in Alaska, BC and the straits.
I don't even fish for them but it would be cool to see folks that do get more opportunity. Unfortunately, I just don't see that happening.

I was busy the entire summer with a new baby so can't comment on fishing this summer other than it seemed it was very good.

What I can say to support your observations is that these two were both deep, caught close to the deck in about 180'. The top fish was packed with those small pink and clear amphipods that seem fairly common in open water areas of the Sound. You can see some of them puked up in the picture. Both took mooched green label and were caught within 20 minutes and 50 yards of each other. I must have stumbled onto an actively feeding school.
