  2. Taxon

    Name this mayfly

Convention calls for the scientific name to appear in italics, for the genus to start with a capital letter, and for the species to start with a lower-case letter, as in Hexagenia limbata. ;)

    Name this mayfly

I believe this male subimago of family Heptageniidae, and to (probably) be Cinygma dimicki. If I am correct, then its common name would be Western Light Cahill.

Hi Tom- I submitted your excellent photo to BugGuide, just to verify that the opinions I had expressed earlier were accurate. This was the response.

    Late Winter Mayfly

Thanks, Tom. Based on it having emerged from the Touchet River, it is probably more likely to be Ameletus celer than it is to be Ameletus vernalis. Please see: WA Mayfly Distribution - By County. Then, click on the blue hyperlink for Columbia County,

    Late Winter Mayfly

Hi Tom- Rather than being of genus Rhitrogena, I believe this male subimago to be of genus Ameletus, perhaps (but not necessarily) Ameletus vernalis. From which county, and what date did it emerge?

    Fall BWOs on the Yakima

Hi Steve, The most obvious difference (in their winged lifestages) is the number of tails. A BWO would have only 2 tails, whereas a Trico would have 3 tails.

    Fall BWOs on the Yakima

Hi Steve- The mayfly female subimago pictured above is not generally referred to as a BWO, but rather, as a Trico. I believe it to have the scientific name of Tricorythodes explicatus. Incidentally, that is one fantastic photo.

thinking of Dry Falls on Thursday

Ah, well at least I recognized the new looking green pontoon covers. Re: Best pontoon ever! I certainly agree! ;)

thinking of Dry Falls on Thursday

Hmm. I suspect it may be a slow leak through the valve. Don't recall whether (or not) the valve is replaceable, but if not, perhaps you could try cleaning with it with sone mild hand soap. Another suggestion would be to attempt contacting BDD from the old forum, as I sold another Xstream...

Hi Bambooflyguy- Wow, this is the first time I've seen a photo of your Xstream since I sold it to your friend. And after all these years it still looks like new; simply amazing! Hope you are enjoying it as much as I did.
