    Beetlejuice

Had a day off on Friday and headed up to a lake with a robust cutthroat population. You gotta walk in to this one right now, so I brought my float tube and hoped the wind wouldn't be too bad. I saw some fish rising near the shore and decided to look through the modest selection of dry flies I...

    Hot new lake fly 😁

So good Paul! I'll bet that will work for steelhead too!

Surprised by some nice fish today

Here's the fly @Jakesmylab . It's a polliwog tail from the good folks at Spawn Fly Fish, with black/blue/purple dubbing in the front. Very easy to tie, and seems to catch almost anything that swims.

Surprised by some nice fish today

I was itching to get out today, but didn't have enough time to go too far so I explored a nearby spot I suspected might have some bass or other warmwater species. As I walked up to the water, I could see 3 nice fish cruising in the shallows. I cast my unweighted black polliwog out and on the...

    East Lake

Good tip @Wade Rivers, thanks. Going to try lighter and longer leaders too next time.

    East Lake

Just got back from an annual camping trip to East Lake. Family activities like biking, swimming, s'mores, hot springs, and trips to the resort for ice cream tended to compete with fishing opportunities, but I ventured out when I could. I've only fished this lake in August (obviously not ideal...

    Urban bass close to home

Good advice on the tippet @Matt B and @Rob Allen. I won't get outgunned next time!

    Urban bass close to home

I love fishing. I think about it all the time. I'm constantly scouring the map for new places and reminiscing about favorite haunts. For some reason, these thoughts are always of places far away. I have a spot very close to my house that I go sometimes. It's close enough I can even walk there...

    Hallpass Lake

Cool, thanks! Hadn't encountered one of those yet. Looks like a great boat to fish out of!

    Coldwater mud slide

I think it's the hairpin turn after the lake on the way up to Johnson Ridge. I heard they have the whole road closed at the junction by Science and Learning Center for now though. Hopefully that changes as this one looks like it will take a while to fix! Great aerial footage here:

    Wetside Carpin Qs

Had a time I was kayaking in the Portland area chasing carp. It was spring and they were in shallow water. I'd spook them at close range and they'd swim in straight line, sometimes right into the side of my kayak. Bonk!

Ugly fly, tiny fish, and what are these long worms?

Headed out to a thin blue line in SW Washington yesterday evening. I love fishing I small dry flies in places like this, but I often find my dry flies sink after a while, even with generous floatant and various methods of drying off. I hastily tied a few flies before my trip, including one...

My first steelhead on a fly!

Thanks @Dustin Chromers , I'll try that next time.

My first steelhead on a fly!

I am a bit worried about that @Tallguy ! I tried out my partner's spey rod when we were out there. It's a fun (and surprisingly relaxing) way to fish.

My first steelhead on a fly!

Got a text the other evening from a friend who had an open seat on his drift boat. He was targeting summer steelhead on a well-known west side stream with a robust hatchery program. I've caught a fair number of steelhead on gear, but always wanted to get one on a fly. Problem is I am a...

    Quick trip chasing smallmouth

I've found a few good largemouth in there too over the years @Rob Allen ... and a bunch of other fun warm water species. Even caught a sculpin on a jig leech in there once, a first on a fly rod for me.
