URGENT Legislative Request: Prioritize Funding for Steelhead Fisheries (possibility of Skagit in 2027?)

This is the updated message at the TU action link, which is at least movement in the right direction: UPDATE: Thanks for making your voice heard! The Washington Senate adopted the proposed amendment this afternoon allowing greater WDFW funding flexibility. More updates to come when the...

URGENT Legislative Request: Prioritize Funding for Steelhead Fisheries (possibility of Skagit in 2027?)

All valid points, Curt. But at this point, if this might be the only chance to find some potential funding for a 2027 Skagit season, it's worth a shot. Even if WDFW decides enforcement or another native fish program that is not warmwater fisheries needs the support, it's an improvement. If...

URGENT Legislative Request: Prioritize Funding for Steelhead Fisheries (possibility of Skagit in 2027?)

This was sent out from Trout Unlimited yesterday, highlighting a potential funding option in the state legislature via an amendment that would re-allocate WDFW funding and give them more flexibility with fisheries they can and/or would possibly fund. The session ends on Thursday, so I'm...

WDFW did not request funding for a 2027 Skagit-Sauk season

Simple answer: Kelly Cunningham doesn't care about rec anglers. His primary constituents are the co-managers, followed by the NT commercial fleet, and then whatever scraps are left, he begrudgingly tosses to us rec anglers. As he stated to staff last year about funding the Quicksilver Portfolio...

    YES on Bill 6241

Here is the response to the bill from WDFW to the Sen. ANR Committee and the fiscal note is attached (and to be clear, Cunningham only signed this letter and in no way helped draft it): January 29, 2026 Honorable Chair Chapman and members of the Senate Agriculture & Natural Resources...

    OP Steelhead are not Endangered

"At this point guides are about as regulated as individual fishermen when they are obviously not the same." Bingo.

    OP Steelhead are not Endangered

I mostly agree. I would reason they definitely take a larger share of the impacts, but those are already (mostly) managed and monitored. But on the whole eliminating guides comes down to the quality of the fishery and the experience anglers are looking for as a non-guided angler. Less crowds...

    OP Steelhead are not Endangered

That last sentence is another empty promise, @Guy Le Fly. Why would NMFS continue to monitor the status or even more importantly, why and how are they going to work with the state and tribal co-managers when they won't even have any regulatory authority in the DPS? With all of cuts to staff and...

Skagit Wild Steelhead Fishery Monitoring - Under Threat of Budget Cuts

I agree! It seems that Region 5 is a leader for being at the forefront of programs like this and the current efforts to develop a Management Strategy Evaluation for the Lower Columbia tributaries. Hopeful that with the recent fish program leadership change in Region 6, things might improve, but...

Skagit Wild Steelhead Fishery Monitoring - Under Threat of Budget Cuts

Yes, they've been running this program for three years now. I believe last year they had maybe close to 60 or so scale samples provided from anglers to WDFW. It's a good program that hopefully can be replicated in other regions and areas to improve age-class data. Here is an article with a...
