How to fight Saltwater Salmon on a 6wt

Sometimes they do! But coho can be very acrobatic. I’ve had some practically jump on the beach 😆. Two hand strip set definitely helped my hookup/landing rate, also getting them on the reel if they take enough line. I’ve rarely lost fish while reeling up my excess line, and I find my Lamsons drag...

Just one this afternoon but it was a pretty one. Saw a few more jumpers and the weather was pretty calm.

Started off the afternoon a bit slow but after about an hour I connected with this beautiful chrome cutty. He spit up this 3-4” herring in my net. Time to tie some bigger flies! I was reeling in to call it a day and about halfway in I had a bite like a freight train. He pulled some drag and...

Just one little guy this morning, had a few more grabs and lost a nice fish around 16” or so. The weather was nice and I had a good view of the mountains!

Strange, weird or odd or whatever beach finds thread….

This big Chum must of been victim of a seal or sea lion on the way past my SRC beach.

Can’t beat Halloween SRC! Wind was a little too much at the first beach so I relocated and landed this fellow. Wind was manageable but not the easiest casting conditions. Feels like fall!

I tied up some clousers @Stonedfish style last night and I can confirm that the cutties love them! I had probably 15+ bites but only brought one to hand (combination of my strip sets being awful and the floating line didn’t help much either). He was a big one though!

Went to see if the cutthroat were around at a beach I’ve fished the past few years this afternoon. Brought 3 to hand and lost probably 4-5 more. The last fish was a chunky 15”. I always appreciate how beautiful these fish are, especially when they get into their fall colors.

1/1 this morning, had another follow. Only fished for about an hour or so.

    Puget Sound

2/3 in a little over 2 hours of fishing this morning. The colored up buck was not the largest, but probably the hardest fighting coho I’ve caught this season. Multiple drag screaming runs.

Mushroom and other wild edible foraging

Found my first Chanterelles of the year this afternoon! Not too many out yet in my area but the rain this week will help greatly.

Probably my best day of the season so far. 2/5 in a little under 2 hours of fishing. Hooked two fish within 30 minutes and they both popped off at the beach while I was trying to land them. Had a pretty large fish, Im guessing 6lb + take it 10’ in front of me and it give me a few tail slaps...

This one cut deep orange/red. The bigger of the two I caught on Tuesday had very firm, lighter orange flesh. Definitely some bigger fish showing up. I weighed one for a fellow on Monday that was 6.8lbs and I saw one caught today that weighed 7.5lbs.

1/1 this morning. Had two follows within 30 minutes of getting to the beach. One grabbed my fly but missed the hook. Saw this buck jump to my right and I threw a cast in front of him and hooked up within a few strips. Long but skinny. Fought very hard. He spit up a cut plug herring while I was...

    Official Beach Rod Thread

My first saltwater rod was a 9’6 6wt Vice. I don’t know if it’s the extra 6 inches but it felt very stiff, heavy, and tiring to cast. Once I got my second rod (9’ 7wt Ion XL), I never fished it again.

    Official Beach Rod Thread

My current Coho rod is a 9' 7wt TFO Blitz that I'm absolutely in love with. If you can get over the bright green exterior, it is light in the hand, fast, and I was confidently casting 95% of my SA Titan 7wt Int/3/5 (before it disintegrated). I can also vouch for TFO's warranty as I broke the...

1/2 this morning. First fish took off and spit the hook mid jump, probably a 4-5lber. I saw this little buck zoom in and nab my fly 10’ from my rod tip. Had a very large herring or possibly small salmon in its stomach.

2/3 in about 3 hours of fishing this morning. Lost one that grabbed my fly at my rod tip while I was scratching my nose 🤣 fought him for a minute or so but he popped off at the beach. Had another good follow and a couple missed bites. The bigger fish I landed must of escaped a sea lion pretty...
