SFR What You Can Take Through TSA

Not much help to most, but back in 2018 I was flying back from a fly tying event in New Brunswick, Canada. I wanted to pass time by tying on the plane. I brought materials for a Blue Charm. As far as tools, all I brought in my small tying kit were cuticle nippers and hackle pliers (if...

    Bamboo and the Winters Hope

I can understand the preference. Personally, it's just not as fun to deadrift a sunk fly for steelhead versus the swung fly. I do like the Bill's tinkering thoughts when he created the Paintbrush, though. Cheers

Beautiful steelheading. I enjoy seeing the Paintbrushes in that McMIllan tribute box as well.

Tigers of the Kilombero (Tanzania – Nov. 2024)

I gotta pipe in. Better than articles in Gray's or Fly Fish Journal. Your word craft mesmerizes. The pictures are outstanding. I have no desire to go to Africa, yet I feel my senses have travelled there from you're storytelling. Fantastic.

the Mother of Canyon River trouts

Nice to see you over here @aaronostoj ! Thanks again for reading, everyone. P.S. (in case you missed it) While the Non Twist Knot may help mitigate some twist, it isn't 100% twist-proof (especially with larger tippets on smaller eyed hooks). But additional really nice benefits to this knot is...

the Mother of Canyon River trouts

@JackJester I tie flies without a vise, so it's difficult to film on video (the lens can't focus since the hook is always moving). But I did a half 🫏 tutorial for social media: I created this pattern for steelhead while drawing inspiration from Harry Lemire's GreaseLiner and Thompson...

the Mother of Canyon River trouts

I don't use as much mono as Amy Hazel does in the example. And the remainder of the mono I use - I place in my wader pocket or fly box to use for the next fly.

the Mother of Canyon River trouts

@notaspeyguy Matt B posted the yootoob link from Deschutes Anglers about 3 posts down from the top. I really like the knot for dryfly steelheading (not for its no twist gimmick but...) because it exits the tippet thru a downeye hook in such a way that the fly is automatically "riffle-hitched"...

the Mother of Canyon River trouts

Thanks for letting me share. For those that wanna try that knot...I'm pretty confident in it. I've landed a nice doe BC steelhead on that knot. Even with just a double surgeon (instead of a triple surgeon knot as in Amy's video) it still holds - of course it depends on the eye size of the hook...

the Mother of Canyon River trouts

I try not to get too post-happy but sometimes an event requires me to contemplate, journal, and share on what just happened before I start forgetting the details in the ether of my brain fog. My last post (less than a week ago) was about my daughter's personal best trout - I didn't fish much...
