    Tuna Questions

I use Berkeley fire line, either white or black, the same 30/40 lb stuff I use for steelhead flies. For tuna, I make a triple loop off the hook, tie them in individually, 2 down, 1 up, on a 2/0 or so Ahrex short shank hook. I double them back when tying in and glue the shit out of everything...

    Tuna Questions

I tried various iterations of short shank and high tie, or antifouling mono loop, for awhile, but still had some that fouled on the cast. Maybe I could have epoxied them, or done some things like that, but I never landed on anything I liked as a fly for movement and profile, and also didn't...

    Tuna Questions

I have almost solely been using stinger only flies the past couple years. Mostly because my flies were occasionally fouling on the front hook, especially when casting. I found some times when I wasn't getting bit on the troll, or seeing tuna reject my fly on a retrieve, it was because a few...

Advice for Fernie BC area "classified waters"

I think you need to reserve one of the classified waters permits within the first minutes of openings if you want to succeed. Look at how many non resident permits are allowed for each week and fishery, it can vary substantially and your chance of success can depend on that number. So I have...

    It's always the ground wire

Camped on the Yellowstone two nights ago. Water seemed a bit high and turbid from runoff, but not too bad. Not much snow visible, so maybe not too much more runoff??

NFR TICKS - The Threat Grows

No, it's not covalently bonded to the clothing fibers. If it was, it wouldn't kill anything because it couldn't get into them. Your clothes are soaked in it, and it comes off with time and when wet and when contacted by something. Insects can't handle that exposure as well as your liver can...

    NFR Got any Herp pictures?

Sexytime. Though it seems late in the year for that. They can form a ball of love crazed dude snakes. I have seen it a couple times before on the East Coast.

8WT WF line input for Alaska needed

I just didn't want to admit to having an 8wt steelhead indicator floating line....I have even caught steelhead on the bobber with it. Yes, great choice!

8WT WF line input for Alaska needed

Key question for floating lines is whether you need to mend after throwing a long cast. Streamer might be fine on a short heavy head, but if you want it to sink, or you need to mend that surface fly, I would consider a long head and some ability to toss mends into the system. I dislike the...

1st World Old Man Problem - Tendonitis

Ran into this for many years because I climbed a lot. It's usually muscle imbalance, look at some of the strengthening and rotation exercises for top side forearm muscles, including ones you can do with a heavy cast iron pan or a single weight on the end of a dumbbell bar. Till then, rest...

    Puget Sound

Saw a few of our iridescent ancestors today. https://salvomag.com/article/salvo68/comb-jellies-for-the-win Ctenophores or comb jellys. Very, very cool to see, I don't recall seeing the pulsating iridescent rainbows of their cilia before today. They look like they belong on Pandora more...

    Longview Pulp Plant

So true. If a company is producing a commodity, every single penny is tracked, and for way too many companies, anything that takes a speck of extra time, or relates to worker or environmental safety, or is anything above bare minimum, is counted as "extra" pennies that don't actually have to be...

Just bring a snack next time SF. Herring is a more traditional option for that kind of behavior. You don't get many calories from tail.

Most regrettably the time has come

If anyone needs a second opinion, I have the exact same boat minus a couple details, bought in part because albula had one and he is someone considered to really, really know what he is doing when it comes to fishing. It does everything he listed quite well. I have no complaints at all.

NFR TICKS - The Threat Grows

Just a note for all the people treating their clothes with permethrin: it's highly toxic to fish, so please keep your permethrin treated clothes out of the water. Pyrethroids are reasonably good at killing everything, a characteristic that should be associated with thoughtful use...

NFR Talk to me about portaledges (climbing sleeping systems) - your likes/dislikes

My shittiest night big wall sleeping story: My first wall (May 2000) was "The Nose" right up the center of El Cap where the angle changes. We had no ledge, and our second night we were up at "Camp 6", roughly 2000-2400' up where it is near vertical to overhanging, but another party was there...

NFR Talk to me about portaledges (climbing sleeping systems) - your likes/dislikes

Risk is interesting. It's true it's cumulative and additive, and you take some risks to get to a place where a portaledge is needed. Its also true that humans are generally pretty bad at assessing actual risk and understanding the numbers. I bet if you run the numbers, taking a boat out on...

NFR Talk to me about portaledges (climbing sleeping systems) - your likes/dislikes

Likes: hang one of those from a tree in your backyard, or when you go camping, and your kids will consider you some sort of awesome amazing demi-god for the incredibly cool pop up play structure you just provided for them and their friends. Potentially worth it to get one just for this use.
