We made a weird map of the Lower Deschutes

It starts at Pelton (at the bottom) and goes all the way to the mouth (at the top). That's a cool build! RMs are on there, but not coordinates. We used a bunch of different resources, the Boater's Guide, the current (new-ish) river signage in camps, a few older maps, etc. to create this one...

We made a weird map of the Lower Deschutes

Ha ha ha, yesssss. One of the early "proof points" was when I brought one over to Amy Hazel at Deschutes Angler. She was stoked about it, which was great, but she definitely eyeballed it hard in certain areas and said "OK, so you didn't put any secret spots in there." I can't say I _wasn't_...

We made a weird map of the Lower Deschutes

Hey everyone! We did a fun thing I wanted to let you know about: A pocket-sized "ribbon map" of the Lower Deschutes benefitting the Deschutes River Alliance. The "ribbon" style of map was originally popular with riverboat captains on rivers like the Mississippi, where they'd have this big...

    $500 Pikeminnows.

How long until we get some backwoods aquaculture going, fattening up the little ones on shredded newspapers soaked in cooking oil, turning them in for the bounty once they get fat enough. Maybe even some illicit net pens…

George Daniel and the Penn State fly fishing program

I wrote this profile of the one and only George Daniel for the PennStater, the Penn State alumni magazine, and they wound up putting it on this month's cover! A funny coincidence, given George shot Joe Humphreys for a piece in Fly Fisherman this month also. Anyway, thought some would enjoy a...

Official 2025 CARP (and Capr) thread

Got my first carp this week. The eat was very subtle. Hooked another, bigger fish that took me to my backing and then I bent the hook out trying to put on the brakes before it went into a big mass of wood. Had a few minutes giggling after both. This is fun.

Why in the world does WA still have paper-only fishing licenses?

Yeah, it's the whole "comes out of a printer on a long roll" part that's meaningful. It'd be too big of an asspain to individually waterproof 18-24" strips by hand.

Why in the world does WA still have paper-only fishing licenses?

Random (slightly germane) question: does anyone know the technical name or trade name for the type of material the WA licenses / catch cards are printed on? I'm poking around for an art project and would like to print some things on a similar waterproof / tear-proof material.

THE DRAKE magazine - any subscribers, thoughts???

Plus one for Multco Library and Libby. In addition to The Drake and Fly Fisherman and Angler’s Journal they have fishing magazines from the UK (Trout & Salmon) and New Zealand (Trout Fisher). Always fun to see what other places are up to, especially if it’s free.

    NFR Going Solar

Welcome to the power business! We passed our first anniversary with 12.4kw on the roof this summer. PTO (permission to operate) day is a reason to celebrate. As are the monthly bills cheaper than Netflix.

NFR Apple satellite SOS....is it for real?

Helpful thread. I've used InReach a lot before but am watching Apple, because they've got a track record of shrinking other devices and including them in the package (camera, GPS, etc.) and I can't see how this one isn't next. Funny enough I got an email from AAA this weekend saying they are...
