    Puget Sound

Rule of thumb is that Ocean runs don’t show up in the Sound in good numbers until Labor Day weekend, give or take a week. I would expect that to be the case this year. We just gotta cross our fingers for cooler weather and rain.

Where your grocery store salmon originates

Last month my mom came home with a salmon from QFC. She threw the packaging away and baked it for us. I knew something was up with it after I tasted it so I dug through the trash to find the packaging. It turned out that it was a chum packaged from China (probably caught somewhere in...

    Puget Sound

There was a section in there earlier today saying that 3,049 of the 3,900 were caught in MA 9 as well as around 2/3rds of the quota being taken in MA 7. Looks like the writer deleted it for some reason.

    Puget Sound

Not much left in terms of the MA9 chinook quota. Over 3,000 caught in a 3 day period (~1k per day is absolutely ridiculous).

MA9 Salmon Season: 3 Days in July?

On the beaches that I frequent hooking into an adult, migratory king is rare. You do see small schools here and there beginning with the S-river bound summer runs in June, but most years I haven’t seen them until the first week of August (since the peak of the fall run is generally right around...

MA9 Salmon Season: 3 Days in July?

More like Puget Sound Chinook salmon fishing is becoming an endangered species. The quotas are shrinking while the gear fishing fleets get more concentrated to specific areas due to constant closures. I wish I had a more positive outlook, but it looks like these short weekend fisheries are...

    Puget Sound

I was actually thinking about that but figured that a few Roman candles won’t hurt. I never get over excessive with fireworks, while other people like my neighbors treat the 4th of July like it’s a war. Paved surfaces are actually the biggest source of water pollution in the Puget Sound fyi...

    Puget Sound

Was lighting fireworks today off a MA 9 beach and saw thousands of small fish jumping out of the water from the shoreline to 30 yards out. Probably 2-3 inches long and did not act like herring or sandlance (or other baitfish). Rather, it was like observing the smolts you see jumping in the...

    And there it is...

I wonder why WDFW doesn’t explore gear restrictions in cases like these. I would think a hook size restriction, fly-fishing only, or floating lines only would achieve the same goal in having minimal encounters with chinook in the system. Or could it be that WDFW just wants us off the water...

    2024 Bison Score

I remember the time I went to Yellowstone. People were treating the wildlife there (bison, deer, elk) like it was a petting zoo. Everyone stopping their cars and jumping out when ever they saw an animal. And playing the game of getting as close as you could to them in order to get a Facebook...

Non-Fly What’s your favorite cheap flounder bait

Grocery store tiger prawn cut into small chunks also works really well. Just don’t forget them in your car on a sunny day.

    dating aps and fish pics

Never used a dating app before but my instagram is full of me with big bloody coho from all the gear dirtbagging I’ve done and the occasional pretty trout I share fly fishing. I doubt there is any girl out there that is finds my fish pictures interesting though as seen in the lower number of...

    Favorite Fishing Weather

Mid 50s to high 60s. No rain, but drizzle is ok. Anything outside that range and it’s a lot harder to convince me to fish (unless it’s the early mornings or evenings on days when it’s above 70).

    2024 NOF

No Skykomish kings for sport anglers is a huge waste of money, especially with all the renovations at the hatchery. Why are we dumping millions of dollars into raising dumb hatchery fish when sport anglers get no opportunity? Are they just raising them for whale food? No surprises in the salt...

    Litter

Our state has a major dog shit problem. Ive found so much dog shit alongside trails, on beaches, and on river banks and it drives me nuts. People think it decomposes, but there is plenty of research that makes it clear that it actually adds harmful waste that is detrimental to the environment.

    2024 NOF

Looks like the Sky might be really restricted to fishing this summer again because of those king returns. Will be interesting to see how they manage MA 7/9/10 this summer too. I would not expect a long season for the boat anglers going after kings.

    Puget Sound

Blackmouth. In some spots, it was pretty good fishing for them off the beach in the 90s in May/June according to my family fishing log. We can’t fish for them now because only a fraction of those fish are still around now.

Basic Survival Skills for a Flyfisherman Just Learning to Swim

Even when I fish the beach, I usually keep safety in mind and at least pay attention to my surroundings since you never know how fast things can get dangerous. Even some of those big waves caused by barges or cruise ships in the sound could be dangerous if your not paying attention or have...
