Need some clarification on the banana jinx

I dunno, I don't think you can exclude the bobbers. If there is a banana effect, it is going to be transferred from your hands to your fly, and the best way to test that is to have the fly sit still in the water and give the fish time to "inspect" the fly before they hit, as opposed to...

    What's Catching You Fish?

This ugly thing accounted for two steels, including a wild hen, today. The water was high and off colored today, (surprise), and I was using a Hoh-bo type spey fly and was thinking I should use something bigger and louder. I hung up on a rocks couple minutes later and broke off and found this...

    Favorite Fly To Tie?

I, too, have tied way too many flies and have many that will never see water. My favorite ties are done the day before hitting the water and are tied specifically for that day of fishing, and I love it when they bring me a fish..... Right now it is steelhead flies.

    What's Catching You Fish?

The kilowatt has produced my last couple landed fish. After I landed one today, I went through the run a second time with my 5 wt spey and riffle-hitched the muddler. I had three “hello there” from fish, one was a complete whiff ( by the fish and by me,) one was a grab and pull but no hook up...

Waders that will last me at least 5 seasons

I have had the best luck with Orvis. Had a couple that developed leaks but they were able to repair them with a fee, but the repair held well.

FS 3 Trout Spey Rods: ACR, TFO, ARE

Top 4 sections are same. New handle plugs into that for the 11’9” 5 piece, original handle and extra lower section plug into top 4 sections for 14’ 6 piece.

FS 3 Trout Spey Rods: ACR, TFO, ARE

Funny but I got an ACR 14’ 5wt. 6 pieces. I called Steve Godshall about getting a line for it and he told me that it’s the same rod as their 11’9” 5 wt 5 piece so he built me another handle for it so I can use it either way. Fun rod.

    What's Catching You Fish?

Used these three flys To land some of these Here I landed 2 fish, but had 5 others take line off the reel and not hook up or come unbuttoned in less than 4 hours of fishing. Fishing was great despite (because of?) the 15-20 mph wind straight in the face. Actually the wind totally quit...

    Bread Thread

I was doing my bread in the Lodge Combo Cooker initially, as I had bought one years ago actually for camping. Then my wife bought me a dedicated ceramic coated bread pan. But we redid a few things in our kitchen recently and so we bought a new range so we got the gas stove top with the...

    Bread Thread

Gary, do you order your flours online? I’ve debated doing that, but the cost of shipping always gets to me. I actually ordered from King Arthur recently with a gift card I received and so I did get 5 pounds of the Golden Whole wheat and baked this morning since shipping was the same as it was...

What's your favorite mono running line & why?

So I have been using Lazer Line in the 20 and 30 pound sizes. My buddy lost his whole Skagit head when his Lazer Line broke after he hung up on some weeds. (I found it and recovered it the next day for him.). That got me thinking of how old my Lazer Line was so when I ordered a new Skagit...

Not just local fly shops are closing (not that Orvis is anything but a clothing store now)

"Orvis had revenue of 3.23B JPY in the quarter ending July 31, 2025, with 20.45% growth. This brings the company's revenue in the last twelve months to 12.82B, up 46.35% year-over-year. In the fiscal year ending October 31, 2024, Orvis had annual revenue of 11.44B with 43.66% growth." I found...

    Storing all those fly rods

I have a couple of bamboo rods I bought at an estate sale and they have no rod tubes. I assume they shouldn’t lean up against a wall for a long time or might get a permanent bend, especially in the tip? Or is that not something to worry about? I like the idea of the blueprint holders, but...

    Storing all those fly rods

So I’m rearranging my fly tying and storage room, where I keep the majority of my fly rods. I have somewhere around 20 fly rods of all varieties, many of which I wrapped myself from blanks, and so they do not have the factory rod tubes. So I have rods in marked tubes, unmarked tubes, and just...

    Deals at online Retailers

Ok all ye old farts, according to a quick search of the Google, an Orvis Far and Fine graphite rod in 1980 cost as much as $250. According to an inflation calculator, $250 in 1980 is worth $980 in 2025. So realistically, the price of fly rods has not really increased.
