Chum From a Canoe - Miami Cove (Tillamook Bay)?

Two anchors should work. Chum do seem to be the bulldogs of salmon so you're usually in for a tug of war when hook one of the critters. I feel they must mill around in the bay for sometime before heading up the river. Usually they are colored up quite heavily when you can them in the...

    Bladderless Float Tube?

I tried a SuperCat prototype before they started selling them to the public. I've been a fan ever since that day... however many years ago that was. Considering the boat is made out of something similar to rubber raft material and has no bladder, it is one tough critter (and I'm hard on my...

Chum From a Canoe - Miami Cove (Tillamook Bay)?

Seems like a good idea to me. Many, many years ago both the Miami and Kilchis were fly rod friendly .... true, there was a certain circus aspect to it all but eventually the crowds would diminish and during that time, you could catch a lot of salmon. One of my best days on the Miami was...

Get your lithium batteries and fly rods all from the same place!

They are frequently bought together with the rod.

Get your lithium batteries and fly rods all from the same place!

If all we have to go on is the photo, I can't see how the heck you can tighten down a reel on the rod. So yeah, it is very problematic if there's no way to tighten the reel seat.

What the heck did I catch?

Every now and then, you can catch fish that just shouldn't be there. Long ago I was fishing The Metolius and one of the crew caught a fish that looked exactly like a 14-inch Atlantic Salmon (I'm not making this up). We stopped by Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery and told one of a tech what was...

What the heck did I catch?

Other than the correct answer is Atlantic Salmon, the part of the fish that has me wondering is the tail. The fork of the tail is extreme. I don't think a chinook would have such a forked tail.... so ya got me.

    An unplanned purchase

A very, very long time ago. I'm not even sure if anyone still makes the post style doll eyes. The true moral of the story is that you can find some amazing fly tying products at surprising places (including hobby shops). I had a good friend in the 80s who worked in R&D for a fly and...

    An unplanned purchase

Craft and fabric shops are indeed a great source for tying material. At one time I bought post type doll eyes for my hard body bass poppers. I cut the posts down a bit but they stayed in place much better than the self adhesive ones they push today. Before the self adhesive eyes, the...

What do you cut wire with?

I'm also bad because I do the same ... however, I do use the bottom section of the blades and not the tips... somehow that makes me feel better about it all...

    Fish Camp

I've heard there are runs of American shad in most the coastal rivers of Oregon but this is the first time I've seen proof. Back when there was a ton of salmon in the rivers, it was my favorite time to fly fish.... especially for coho. They are a blast and certainly fight much better than...

So Long and Thanks For All The Fishes

BTW: I checked the mileage again this morning ... due to this thread ... the Explorer has 120K on it ! I was off by 10K. Now I'm really worried :) This is actually my third Explorer. The 2000 isn't built nearly as well as the previous models but it is still hanging in there and buying...

So Long and Thanks For All The Fishes

Guess I won't worry so much about my 2000 Explorer with 110 K on the critter.... but I probably still will.

So Long and Thanks For All The Fishes

Wow! 301 K miles on it  I remember when most people sold their vehicles if they got up to 100 K. But that was back when they didn't cost as much as a house.

    Small creek fishing

I live in Oregon so I can't really address small creek fishing in the Washington Cascades. I do know that just about every larger river that ends up in the Pacific in Oregon can be traced backwards to small creeks that all hold wild trout ... albeit, they are not giants. When it comes to...

Adult Dragonfly and Damselfly Pattern Recommendations

I've seen a lot of trout jump out of a lake to take an adult damsel out of the air. As far as my dry fly representations that land on the surface, I can't say those have really worked for me. Nymphs yes, flying adults, no. Now, if I could tie a fly that could hover like an adult damsel, I...

    Cascade lakes advice? (Oregon)

You guys that do well at Crane drive me nuts! Crane hates me and I have never done well there. However, East and the other lakes along Century Drive have not been so hostile toward me. Its been a long, long time since I spent a lot of time on those wonderful lakes so my information is...
