How to fish boobies? Need advice

i use a type 6 sinking line, with a 4-5' tippet and do fairly short, firm strips, at approx 1 second intervals, to allow the fly to dip up/down as it moves forward. I tie some in natural-coloured dragonfly patterns, others in tequila booby patterns. The unlikely-looking tequila booby patterns do...

    Stacked bamboo reelseat

Whenever I tried to ream birch bark grips, they always wanted to come apart. I finally figured out how to avoid any reaming: I choose a mandrill (smooth stainless rod) to match the blank dia (or fit directly to the blank, then use a stepped bit in my drill press to fit each ring. Its a lot...

    Stacked bamboo reelseat

I hadn't realized this was how bamboo grips were made (like birch bark)....Looking forward to seeing finished result. What do you use to ream the grip once glued up?

Bamboo would work well on that river. We were dead-drifting beadhead hare's ear and prince nymphs.

Our favourite local river...gin-clear, with deep green runs....always have good days there. I really like the reels..old-school-style clickers that, IMO, go well with the rods.

Yes, happy with the rods...Hers a 7 1/2' 4 wt, mine an 8' 4 wt....no problem reaching wherever we needed to be on the river,

First Rainbow Trip of the Year.

My wife and I made the hour-long drive from our home (on Vancouver Island) to one of our favourite small rivers to fish for rainbows, which migrate up fom the lake every May - June. We were a bit early and the river was still too high with snow melt, to be able to cross back and forth...but we...

    Official Beach Line Thread

Most supposed beach lines have a fairly clunky head, designed to turn over big flies, tips etc...which are not necessary when beach fishing coho, etc. There are very few available suitable for light mono leaders and smaller flies. Many of us, here on Vancouver Island, have been using the...

    Riverstick Custom Wading Staffs

Cool-looking add-ons to the staff Brian. Boomerang and T-Reign make heavy-duty ( 14 oz tension) retractors, which enable you to keep the grip at your hip while wading. Here's how I rig mine, clipping the retractor to the hammer loop, with the tether clipped to the ring below the grip. I use...

    Riverstick Custom Wading Staffs

Many thanks David!...and yes, I will say that simplicity and function were a higher priority than cosmetics in designing the staff. ..Glad to hear you're happy with it. Rick

How are you storing/organizing your (flat) materials?

I don't like clutter hanging all over, so I store by material type in plastic containers, stacked in a wardrobe cabinet, with extra shelves added. Same goes for flashabou/crystal flash, etc, which I store in roll-up pockets made with cryovac bag material.

I put the tag ends on the same side as the guides. I also put a tiny (micro) dot of krazy glue where the tag ends cross before trimming. Btw: That is a cool colour combo..

    Black bamboo “ugly stick”

Goes to show that a good caster can cast any rod, whereas a $1000 rod won't help a crappy caster.

    Black bamboo “ugly stick”

Cool idea ! I also like that it has built-in theft protection...(Bet you can leave it leaning against your vehicle all night...and it'll still be there in the morning...;) )

    NFR Humor (No political jokes)

My wife and I have been together almost as long as Sirhan Sirhan has been in jail (I don't know who'll be out first)) I was looking through our texts the other day. It seems most of them take place in Costco (where we go for the 7-course meals: ie: free food samples). ..and this (literally) is...

Rod Building The Rod Building Thread

I did the bottom two tone on tone, but actually prefer the contrast of the 3rd from bottom....The tone on tone seems to fizzle out, in my mind..., where the other, IMO, seems to give it more pop.

I was thinking you'd done a combo of white/gray with blue trim bands (I guess was temp wrap) I would make sure you have a good contrast with the blue. If you try to match the blue blank, and the shade is off, it can spoil/waste the effect. IMO, better to have a good contrast, w/o overpowering...
