    Trout Spey taper

I just talked with Justin and will do what I can to help with my limited knowledge. From what I have experienced so far if the taper is good for a line weight just figure out the difference between line weights in dimension. I will forward to Justin my tapers and hopefully he can make the that...

    New year, new sharpes.

At first I hated splices and your points of the pro’s and con’s are spot on. Now I prefer them and deal with the inconvenience of breaking down at different walk-in spots. I do plan on building a four piece spliced rod at some point which I only have to splice once during quick hits on the...

    New year, new sharpes.

That’s awesome Dave and congrats, I have not gone the swelled route with my rods and I’m curious what the advantage it provides. I did some stress tests on a couple rods and didn’t have any failures. I did find that the swelled splice may help with roll casting or Spey casting as the gives more...

    Elwha 2024?

In general the tribes have always keep there focus on the lower two miles in my experience. As long as the park provides good regulations I don’t see them pushing back. I had a long conversation with the park biologist and he plans on opening it but had concerns about regulations and guiding...

    Elwha 2024?

I look forward to when they open this which I do think will happen as long as people leave the salmon alone. I have talked with the a few people involved and I was surprised it didn’t open this summer. The trout population is healthy and the real question is regulations and guiding. I have...

    James Reid, Bamboo Rodmaker

Currently I have been very happy with 5 sided rods as my tooling is set for right now. I have with my limited experience that 5 sided over 6 sided the 5 sided are quicker than the 6 sided rods I have built so far. I have been experimenting with with scalloping and trying to get a feel how that...

    James Reid, Bamboo Rodmaker

No worries Dave I will build you one free of charge as I‘m still learning and my only ask is input on how the rod performs and what you feel would make it better. I’m building a bunch of two handers and that all I have asked the guys is to give me there input to build a better rod. I have 4 6...

    James Reid, Bamboo Rodmaker

Thanks for sharing Dave, I have had some communication with James and ordered a rod in 2020 and he had been awesome to deal with. My rod is scheduled to be built in 2024-25 and look forward to receiving it. This order also inspired me to build my own rods as 5 years is a long time to wait. He...

    A couple Phillipsons chasing bulls

Thanks for posting Dave, I had a phase we’re all I fished were grey ghosts, lord iris, muddy iris for like two years in the mid to early eighties. I would tie the wing section in hand with thread and then tie them in all all once. I hand a customer that would order 5 dozen grey ghosts every year...

    Bamboo Spey rod #4

I took measurements from some of my rods and used them as a template. After my third rod I have a good feel for what I want taper wise. I have been playing around with scalloping to see how that changes the action. My first two rods were 9 wghts and my last rod ended up being a 7/8 which was my...

    Turkey Day Steelhead

About 6-7 years ago I took my daughter out for a early steelhead trip to one of my favorite haunts. I put her on this seem that you don’t have to cast very far and it was her first time fishing sink tips on a Spey rod. I asked her if see wanted some coaching and after a few casts I realized she...
