    Pink Salmon

Friendly Phil picked me up at the Nisqually Refuge and we drove about another half hour North on I-5 to the Point Defiance ferry lot where there’s a large parking lot and boat launch. We were on the water around 11 am and the tide was dropping from high to low. Pinks were jumping everywhere...

Retrieving balanced leeches in still water

I’ve been using a 60 degree jig hooks and 5/32 or 3/16 slotted beads. Works both ways and easier to tie than those troublesome pins. And the body is shorter. The ones in the pic are plain round beads.

    Tilton river thoughts

You should be able to paddle board up from the state park. A friend and I motored up a few years ago to take a look. Very scenic canyon. The other folks are right about the fishing. It used to be better when they stocked the river up by Morton. There’s some state park owned land with a one...

    October Caddis patterns?

I like some of the patterns that ScottP and Finluver tied, but the best pattern that I have used and tied came from Mike Sturza at Lost Creek fly shop in Onalaska. Disclaimer: I’ve only fished this on the Cowlitz in September and October but I’ve caught many steelhead and Searun cutts. Mikey...

    Portable fish finder

I bought that boat in 92 or 93 in Yakima with accessories for $400. I think they’re $1500 or so now. Worst treatment it had was when I forgot to strap it down on the lance camper after fishing Lenore and dragged it down the highway for a quarter mile. The rough asphalt wore a hole in both...

    Portable fish finder

My Fishing buddy died a couple years back. I bought a Garmin 4. It’s more complicated but there are good tutorials on youtube. I miss the sidefinder on the Fishing buddy. I don't use it much to find fish. I use it to determine temperature and depth. The mapping feature is excellent. Every...

    What are these critters?

Thanks Steve, that’s very interesting. It would be even more interesting if I find daphnia in that lake and catch fish on blobs.

    talk to me about center-pinning

I’ve been using a 10.5’ St Croix rod with an Okuma reel spooled with Pline to fish jigs or squirmy worms in lakes to fish for jumbos. We’ve been fishing out of the drift boat on the middle seat with two partners fishing fly rods. Fishing three fly rods out of a drift boat is a recipe for...
