What was your moment that inspired your transition to flyfishing?

Was born in WA but we moved east to MD when I was 1. The family fishing vacation when we lived on the east coast was to spend a week or more at a lodge in Ontario trolling/jigging for Walleye and casting big baits for Pike and Muskie. My dad had flyfished when he was younger and started up...

    Seattle/Bellevue Clubs

Good luck with your search Jared! That was my reason for joining a couple FFingclubs many many moons ago. Hell, I may even join one again for the social aspact now that I'm retired. A good way to get a 'feel' for the club is to review the past speakers and outings on their website. People...

    It dies with a wimper..

Fished the upper Skagit yesterday, water looked great up there but no action. Quite a few folks out, some on the Sauk and a few on the lower river.

    OP Steelhead are not Endangered

Surprised nobody has mentioned the success of the Snider Creek broodstocking program that was run mainly by the OP guides until DFW ended it. The Quill also deals with co-managers and the same ocean they all share. I'm intrigued by the possibility of successful broodstock programs. But these...

    Skykomish Post Flood

That riffle below BH was money, we used to fish it in spring and then again after the June opener for the occasional hot early Summer Runs. River left was my favorite but both sides would fish at different water levels. It used to be called Hershey Riffle because the Hershey family owned the...

    Skykomish Post Flood

Thanks for the pictorial trip down memory lane Dave, haven't floated that stretch in years. Yes, we caught fish in the old backchannel including the pool in front of the Cattle Ranch. Eagle's Nest and our old highwater spot are also gone. I wonder how the run across from IRS fishes these...

    Skagit Steelhead CnR 2026

I heard from a spey oldtimer (who is not prone to exaggeration) that there was reason for hope. While I'm not getting my own hopes up for anything after Jan 30, at least there are still some folks working to try to make it happen.

    Northern Bulls

Paging Curt Kramer :) Seriously tho, Chrome/22's hypothetical example was focused on if you moved inland bulls into a salt migration friendly habitat (like an upper Vancouver Island river). My guess from having chased Bulls?Dollys around fresh (infrequently) and saltwater (even less) is...

    PNW Flood Watch - Dec 8-12, 2025

Yeah, it's the same everywhere. I have friends that live in Arkansas that are white water junkies, they can't wait for the next flood. :D But usually they run in packs and have their own support crew and ability to self-rescue.

    PNW Flood Watch - Dec 8-12, 2025

Don't really care if they want to risk their life for a few highwater thrills, but doing so when emergency services are already maxxed out aiding other folks is beyond selfish.

    Team Saturn?

Saturn punches well above it's $$$. I believe they're the best value inflatables on the market today. I have 2 Kaboats, have used them for everything from rowing down rivers to using electrics and outboards in lakes and the salt. I have a custom rowing frame that Catchercraft put together...

Fly Lines for Switch rods ?

The Scientific Angler Spey Lite series are my favorite, they have both heads and integrated lines for both Skagit and Scandi up to 420gr. Also the Airflo Scout series are really good for switch rods.

I'm home and moving to increase on being better

Great news Jerry . . . thanks for sharing your pics! I'm really happy to hear that you're on the mend. Rehab is tough but I know you have what it takes to make it through. Was just thinking when we first met, way back in the 90s when you were selling your Valco sled and we took it out for a...

    NFR The time switch sucks!

Just another stupid move by someone in govt to piss the rest of us off. Like so many other things, just leave the Clock alone. It's doing better without your 'adjustments'. My furry alarm clocks are still waking up at their usual time and don't really care what the official time is, they just...

    Quick trip to Central OR

I headed down to a well loved river for a couple days, one day dedicated to giving a guide some spey tips and another to fish for both Steelhead and Trout. Had my Euro rod as well as a 11' 3wt trout spey and my regular 12' 6wt summer spey. There were two things I noticed that were more...
