Comparison is the Thief of Joy

I often pine for the “good old days” on the lower Deschutes, pre-water mixing tower. The powers that be have negatively affected a place that holds a very special place in my life. The D is where I really decided to delve into fly fishing about 30 years ago. We can’t go back. The river is...

Comparison is the Thief of Joy

The draw to fly fishing for me is solving the puzzle. Just when I’m feeling pretty good about my fishing prowess, I get humbled. My good fishin buddy and I often discuss the fact that if each time we go it’s incredible fishing, the pursuit would kind of lose its luster. An...

    1 or 2 rods for walk-n-wade trips

for me, on big rivers, I don’t want to limit myself. And what I mean by that is, I have plenty of “all around” rods that can do most things adequately. As I’ve continued my education in fly fishing, I like to have the right tool for the job. So I may want to take my 10’ 2 wt for light euro...

    Favorite Attractor Nymphs

This is my go-to nymph setup on the D. Fish eat a Walt’s with a crazy oversized tung bead all the time. It often will outfish any other fly I use. Another aha moment for me, in that most of the time, we don’t need fancy flies. Something buggy, flashy will get the job done more times then...

Wanting to move into mid range nymph rod

Tactical Fly fishers review of the Ideal Nymph is what has me pretty fired up for a Diamondback. I’m pretty sure I’m going to pick up an Orvis Clearwater 10’ 3 wt cuz I have Cabelas gift cards…..I really like the 2 wt. it’s a sweet lil stick. The 3 will be about perfect for most of my...

    Small Stream/Rivers Nets suggestion ps

Fishpond Nomad nets I have the Emerger. I like the longer handle. Fits nicely in my Fishpond sling net sleeve. It’s a little spendy, but one of the best fishing gear purchases I’ve ever made. Fishpond makes well thought out gear, imo

    Favorite Attractor Nymphs

I’ve found that some variation of PT, or Walt’s either with, or without cdc collar, and various tungsten bead sizes, and colors, pretty much cover my bases. The metallic pink, copper, and gun metal black are my favorite bead colors.

    2 Rods on a River

I typically carry 3 rods fully rigged on rivers. The inconvenience of it is outweighed by the advantage, imo. I usually have a Euro, dry, and either streamer, or big indo setup. I can cover the water column…..fish at my feet, and out to the middle of the river simply by grabbing another rod...

Wanting to move into mid range nymph rod

I’ve been using a Cabela’s CZN 11 ft 4 wt with a mono rig as my workhorse nymph setup on big rivers like the D. It’s heavy, and honestly its best application is huckin big indo setups. I also have 10ft 2wt Orvis Clearwater. It light, sensitive fun to fish. I really like it. but it’s a...

    Re-soling felt wading boots

Both pairs of boots are solid. I think I like the shoe goo better. It's cheap, and it's everywhere.

    Re-soling felt wading boots

I did my G3's with the Aquaseal plus Neo, and after unwrapping the tape they seem solid. I used shoe goo on the freestones and they have been taped up for going on 48 hrs. Might just leave em taped for 3 days. Iim going to to take both pairs on my trip weekend of the 20th and test em out

    Re-soling felt wading boots

I had the original korkers boots back in the day. Nice, but the leather would shrink up so much had to dump water on em to get feet back in. Had the mudder duckers too. They were pretty cheap, and the upper didn't last. I will look into korkers when I do get a new pair. Hoping to get a few...

    Re-soling felt wading boots

I'm going to use both 1.5 ounce tubes for one pair of boots. I bought a tube of shoe goo for the other pair.....it's like 3.7 ounces I think. I can do a side by side comparison. Seems to me, the most important part of this process is the prep work, and then using a lot of glue, and getting...

    Re-soling felt wading boots

I received the Caddis felt sole replacement kit. It comes with 1.5 ounces of Aquaseal +Neo (neoprene contact cement). Not sure how good it is, or if 1.5 ounces is enough for two boots

    Re-soling felt wading boots

How much did it cost? I found the caddis replacement felt kit at sportsman's for like $13 apiece. I figure for that price, it's worth a try.
