Rods, reels, lines, and even hooks.....All take a backseat when it comes to a harpoon. Such is fishing.

    NFR Swordfish

Also, the mercury issue is very real...but the West coast fish are far different than the East coast fish. In short.. a harpooned Swordfish from the west coast is one of the best seafoods you can slap on the grill.

    NFR Swordfish

"Today, there are only a handful of harpoon boats still operating in California. It’s a disappearing art form—one that survives thanks to passionate, generational fishers like the Hermanns, who balance old-school technique with modern conservation. The next time you cook up a piece of harpooned...

    NFR Swordfish

Images from movies such as "Jaws" portray harpooning. In reality, the act of harpooning a fish is far more exiting. You first see the fins slicing through the surface. Closing in on a "sleeping" fish while standing at the end of the plank, with a heavy harpoon and driving it into the fish and...

    NFR Swordfish

There is no "school" that you can go to that teaches this "trade". For me, it was a boat named "Outlaw" in Dana Point harbor in 1979. Learning to throw the harpoon at kelp and various floating objects was a hoot. We had separate gear at the ready for the sharks. Good times for a long haired...

    NFR Swordfish

I very much appreciate the input. Of course the AI slop images are comically inaccurate. Duh! And yes Swordfish is sold at Safeway...but not all Swordfish steaks are the same. Duh! If you really want to learn about harpooning Swordfish ...you go out to sea...sit up in the crows nest with very...

    NFR Swordfish

Trust me ..a good, quality Swordfish steak on a smokey grill is good eating. With mashed potatoes and green beans... Oh yea. I used to have dozens of the "swords" from these fish. They are most impressive. Thinking about a 500lb fish, slashing those swords around in the dark, deep depths....all...

    NFR Swordfish

This is one of my favorite fish to eat. Harpooned, Swordfish cooked on a bbq is top notch. They use airplanes to spot the fish so that a boat can chase them down and use a long plank for the "harpoon man" to "stick the fish" while the captain steers the boat from the crows nest. The most...

Pacific Bonito "swarm" in San Diego bay.

San Diego Bay has an incredible value for catch and release sport fishing. Halibut, Covina , Bay bass, Spotted Bay Bass and also Bonito. It truly is a sport fisherman's paradise. All those fish are world class table fare. But for god's sake do not eat any fish from that bay! Hotel Del Coronado...

Pacific Bonito "swarm" in San Diego bay.

Sadly enough, there is a substantial community that pride's itself on its elders ability to "catch fish for the family to eat". Grandpa bringing home fish for the family...sounds great.. but these fish are toxic as hell.

Pacific Bonito "swarm" in San Diego bay.

I would like to add that eating any fish coming out of San Diego bay is, IMHO, ill-advised. "America's finest city" aka San Diego, has one of the most toxically polluted bodies of water on the planet. The metal signs attached to the lamp posts in the parking lot warn of eating more than 4...

Pacific Bonito "swarm" in San Diego bay.

Bonito are wonderful fish. A green and silver "crocodile" spoon is all you need. They fight like hell, and can actually get quite large. Using a 8' rod with a spinning reel with 8lb test mono, these fish are a hoot. They don't taste great. That being said, There are ways.....freshness, removing...

    NFR What Are You Drinking?

I will add that you can buy a kitchen gadget that makes "Sonic Ice" for about $150. Basically, thinly shaved ice that is compacted into "pebbles". This ice absorbs the flavor, rapidly cools the liquid and has a texture that is "chewable". But, I'm happy with my seltzer water pebble ice.

    NFR What Are You Drinking?

I'm learning about ice. "Pebble ice" is a thing. Who knew? And "Sonic Ice" is also a thing...you can buy it by the pound at "Sonics" restaurants. Who knew? I bought some "pebble ice" plastic ice cube trays and filled them with "seltzer water". Apparently this is the closest thing you can make to...

The baby shark asked his father "Why do we spend so much time circling the human before we eat him?" He answers. "They taste better after they crap"

Up at the crack: fishing day breakfasts?

Jack in the box. Seriously. You can get a darn good breakfast plate, with eggs, pancakes and bacon, hash browns, apple juice, orange juice ,, whatever... If you are rushing to get out on the water, and need a quick breakfast, this is a viable option.

Up at the crack: fishing day breakfasts?

Almond milk, high dollar breakfast cereal with sliced strawberries or sliced bananas. Quick. easy and no noise. Only the spoon and empty bowl left behind. I use the term "high dollar" because they are options that are different from say "Corn Fakes" or "Jiffy" or "Smuckers". Not to be a snob...

Up at the crack: fishing day breakfasts?

Some mornings I will toast an English muffin in the oven broiler with some butter. I then spread some high priced fruit "jelly, or jam" on them. This combined with strong coffee can make a good breakfast. Also adding (high dollar, organic ) peanut butter is a nice touch.

Up at the crack: fishing day breakfasts?

5:00 am...coffee (good coffee) brewed, and all ready for me, from a timer. Then a bagel. Bagels are magical. Put some butter on it, broil it for 4 minutes in the oven..then creme cheese spread. There are different bagels and different spreads.. This helps in regards to the coffee eating away at...
