    Yellowjacket equinox

That's some kind of wasp with an ovipositor for egg laying, not a stinger. Lots of different wasps have them.

    Yellowjacket equinox

I've used the pheremone traps that are a neon funnel attatched to a plastic bag that you fill with water. It's probably not as quick as the tuna can trick, but it's worked for me a couple of times. You just drown all the workers and the nest starves. Gotta make sure to get the west coast...

    Yellowjacket equinox

I used to do field work for the USGS, and was around a lot of stinging and biting critters. I was live and let live with almost all of them, but fire ants and yellowjackets were exterminated with extreme prejudice.

Southern Vancouver Island trout fishing close to Victoria?

Thanks for the replies. Didn't have much of a plan so I didn't bring anything. We stayed at a place on the beach, and I ended up watching a a lot of action. Every evening at high tide, I'd see nervous water and fish feeding, so I plan on bringing gear next time (if salmon/cutthroat are open...

Southern Vancouver Island trout fishing close to Victoria?

Wow, that is a real bummer to hear. Thanks for the tip though. I'll check in with Robinsons.

Southern Vancouver Island trout fishing close to Victoria?

I will be in Victoria for a few days next week. It's a family trip, but we all like to do stuff outdoors, so is it worth it to bring a 5 weight, a few nymphs/buggers and fish for some trout? I know the Cowichan is the trout river on the island, is the provincial park decent access? Any...

    Summer Steelhead Trip Advice

June is pretty early for summer steelhead on the Deschutes. Maaaaaaaybe you might find one. There is a reason people don't really start trying for them until August. I guess if the dam counts start going bonkers early at The Dalles dam it might be worth a try, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

    Fishing Goals for this Year

Catch some steelhead (while we still can) and develop a snake roll that doesn't suck ass.

    Winston Doubling Down

I've found pieces of rod on the ground in parking areas several times over the years. Most recently I found a 6" section of rod in the gravel the last time I was at the Deschutes.

    Detecting the take (euro nymphing)

Another reason for folks to get a dedicated euro rod if one does this a lot: Euro rods are designed to have quick recovery speed so they stop wobbling faster than other rods. Helps get your leader off the water and get in contact to start drifting and being able to detect a take as quick as...

    Upcoming BC Trips

Don't worry, you can just get them back when most of them come over here to guide for steelhead.

For you older bauer reel owners.

2016. I think the CFX stuff was around before then. I associate the RVR with the change in ownership.

    Detecting the take (euro nymphing)

I'm also in the camp of "if you're doing it just by feel, you're missing most of your takes". I just keep up with whatever Devin Olson is posting on youtube. My whole leader is now just 15 feet of 4x sighter + 6x tippet if I am nymphing (been meaning to pick up 5x sighter to replace it). Using...

This ought to slow things up on busy days

Agreed! There might be enough customers for the guides, but not enough river and certainly not enough fish.

    Upper Colombia/Snake summer steelhead forecasts

I watched a ODFW presentation around the time of the Deschutes framework being setup where they said Columbia summers likely go waaaaay out West in the Pacific, where conditions haven't been as good. Don't coho hang closer to North America? Maybe we should start experimenting with a...

    Upper Colombia/Snake summer steelhead forecasts

Doesn't seem to have the steelhead or coho forecast. I'm guessing it's ocean conditions again? I think the D will open right away this year, but looks like it might not meet the numbers to stay open past July.

Short Belly lines with changeable tips

How long rod are you using and how short line? I just got a longer rod (14'4") and I have started experimenting with it. Do you use lots of overhang? 12'+ sink tips?
