Phil the minimalist! I wouldn't call a lovely Orvis Battenkill a cheapo reel. :) I like the Battenkills for hiking because they are fairly lightweight and you can easily carry an extra floating line and sinking line spool to go with the intermediate spool.

A Hardy Perfect would be just the thing. For a 5 weight granger you'd prob want a 3 1/8" or 3 1/2" narrow. Another classic option would be the 3 1/8" or 3 1/2" JY Young 10B and 16A reels which were sold by various retailers (Farlows called it the Itchen and Alex Martin called it the Thistle)...

This is one of the great bamboo tapers. My Granger 8642 gets as much use as any of my bamboo fly rods.

This creek has no lake in the headwaters but lots of beautiful cutts with red streaks along the side…. We fished up to the confluence pool where the creek takes on a tributary. Tom fulk’s log describes 3 fishing trips up the tributary. Next year i plan to do that.
