Record one day count for winter steelhead on the North Umpqua

That's positive for a change. There seems to be an uptick in returns up and down the coast. Can't help but think the Skagit and Sauk are getting a good return as well. To bad we'll never know due to the department of f... ups running the show.

What's your favorite mono running line & why?

There are pros and cons to every running line on the market. Pick the one that works best for you. That being said I went through a braid phase about 20 yrs ago. The only down side was I couldn't find it thin enough to get any real distance. Other than that no complaints. These days I use...

    Sauk/Skagit open for CnR 2/1

I doubt we will see that data. This is just one of those seasons that has set up for a late return that we will not get to experience. I have no data to back this up. I do have 35 yrs of on water experience and a pretty good vibe of the current conditions. In the next 2 weeks the numbers will...

    Nextcast Undertaker

I spent quite a bit of time recently with the 70 undertaker on the Clearwater. To keep it simple it has a more aggressive taper over all. It creates more line speed and it's a difference you can see and feel. I expect the 45 and 55 will follow that example. I have not cast those yet so we will see.

    Non-Fly Centerpin Thread

That's always a tough situation. I generally down size the offering. I will go with small leaches in black, hot red or orange. I seldom dead drift these I prefer to keep a bit of tension on the float and swing them. The swing is very slow much slower than you can do with a fly line and head...

    2024 WA Coastal Steelhead Regs

Yep, the Klick is a shit show! Being raped by a few very greedy guide operations. Yet, no one has tried stop it. Why is that? When I guided on the Klick years ago the locals were even pissed about it. I took great pride in making Mitchell's guides and Reds very uncomfortable on the river.

Sink tip choice? Multi-d vs T-stuff.

Still not sure what a Skagit head is yet......but I do like 3d short or mid heads and will fish t- material 15ft tips of them all day long.

    Why do you fly fish?

I grew up doing it. Fishing on horse back with my grandfather on the Yakima River. And also a seasonal creek that flowed through our farm in Ellensburg out on badger pocket road. Many years ago. Those were good days. Now it makes sense those really big rainbows we hooked in the canyon were...

    Crazy Idea or Good Idea?

After spending thousands of dollars on various lines to achieve what I wanted. I quickly became proficient at modifying lines to fit my needs. Splicing, welding, lap splicing ect. That was along time ago. Strange enough I still do that. After many failed attempts you narrow down what works and...

    Spey Tips that Actually Helped

Speycasting should always be evolving. There are new things to learn despite the lull in creativity that we see now. My mentors were guys like Mike Kinney, AL Buhr, Marlow, Aaron Reimer, and even Heinrich Mortenson focusing on short heads. They are all valuable tools to add to one's repritore...

    2023 Skagit/Sauk season is a go

The reality is we would not even have a catch & release season if anglers didn't fight for it. It's a tough pill to swallow that we have lost a month of C&R after it being green lighted. More hard core complaining is exactly what needs to happen. The real kick in the nuts is we pay these guys to...
