    Hiking in Felt Soles

Another Korkers fan here. But some things to be aware of. The aluminum bars or hex studs don’t work on some types of rocks. In northern ID the aluminum just seems to slide and slide and I fall. The felt on the other hand provides much better traction. Here in OR the aluminum works great in most...

    Keepin' It Simple Camping Foods?

Precooked chicken - easily makes tacos or salads. Precooked ground hamburger - tacos, or add to packaged gravy and serve over mashed potatoes. Precooked a sausage and rice/beans mixture, freeze in servings then simply reheat. Make biscuits at home cook/freeze and reheat, or cut them out and...

SFR Cool stuff you see while fishing

Unfortunately no pics, two experiences with golden eagles while river fishing. Was an eagle nest cliff up above our camp and the eaglet was learning to fly. The adult had flown with it down close river and it was sitting on a large boulder. Meanwhile the adult made a sneak attack and snagged a...

    NE Oregon

I use a device called mouse blocker (mouseblocker.com). Goes under hood. Combo of light and high pitched squeal. It works. No more mice or squirrels under the hood. I’m a skeptic on things like this, but it was recommended by a Parts Manager friend at a Toyota store. He also referred me to...

Non-stick vs cast iron vs carbon steel.

I’m a big cast iron user. Have a bunch of older Grizwold cast iron. Tends to be a little lighter than the lodges. There are also some new cast iron skillets brands out there that might also be lighter, but think they have premium prices.

If PGC doesn’t work out might also consider Mid Valley Clays between Woodburn and Brooks. It’s a great place to practice

    Why do you fly fish?

Fishing is my way of recharging my batteries. Stress melts away, no “connected” to the outside world. Enjoy time with a good friend, sharing stories and drinking whiskey. And of course the challenge - tricking something with a brain the size of a pea to take a fly 😂

Seeking Real Opinions on Elk Rifles

My old 1977 Roger M77 30.06 kicks like a mule at sight in range. Wear an extra recoil pad. Out in the field never feel it. Decided a bunch a years ago I needed a new elk gun that would “anchor” them on the spot. After my wife asked how many elk I had killed (double digits) and how many took more...

    12ga pump shopping

I have an old Ithaca 20ga (bought in 1977) with modified choke. It can’t be threaded for interchangeable chokes as the barrel is too thin. So you might check on that before you buy one. Ithaca is still in business and you can buy new barrels with changeable chokes.

    12ga pump shopping

I used to have a BPS and really liked it. It’s a very heavy gun, so once it starts swinging it helps with follow thru. I got rid of mine due to the weight. Love the bottom eject. Found out the hard way, never ever ever store it wet. Mine rusted

    12ga pump shopping

Remington 870. Been around forever. What ever you get make sure it has interchangeable chokes. You don’t want to get stuck with a fixed choke when shooting steel for waterfowl. And don’t overlook used guns!

NFR Keeping mice out of the engine compartment...

I installed a “Mouse Blaster Pro” under the hood of my superduty. Hooks directly to the battery. Has ultrasonic squeak plus flashing strobe light. No rodents under the hood since I’ve installed. Was recommended by a part manager friend at a Toyota dealership. Gave me references and those guys...

How do you transport your fly rods?

I cut PVC to match length of rod and reel. Break rod down into 2 pieces, slide into one of the rod socks and slide into the tube. Have started cutting down one end to create a cradle for reel to hold rod “guides” up when in the tube. Made tent cord and sliding cord lock attached to PVC and slip...

    The St. Joe in September.

Idaho Fly Fishing Company is a great fly shop in Avery and they’re pretty keyed into what’s catching fish. I’ve found them to be a great resource. Yellow Sally’s and caddis have been good producers in Sept. Purple haze can also be good. And be aware the rocks are slick, slicker and slickest lol...
