    What are you listening to?

From Dublin for the Easter Weekend. I wish I could hear Shane M sing it.

Looking forward to visiting again soon. Couldn’t ask for better neighbors.

    What's in your vise?

Coyote Shrimp? (..edit: nope. name taken by puglisi….) I’ve been reading about desert vernal shrimp — and they’re crazy. Eggs (cysts) can lie dormant for decades waiting for ponds. Mature in 3 weeks, 5000x hatch weight in 7 days, up to about 1” long. Gotta be what lets the desert stillwaters...

some of your fave fishing sessions?

I split from a family trip in Salt Lake, the year after the housing market crashed, and took our little trailer up to the Green. I wrapped a basic Batson 5wt the first night at Browns Park and finished it the next at the big campground below Dutch John. The epoxy was still tacky in the morning...

Non-Fly Easiest way to catch trout in rivers

Easiest way to start catching trout in rivers might be to find hungry bass in warm water, add a 4-weight, lots of lollipops, and a few buggers. Definitely knock the barbs down. Then cutts in small creeks. We didn’t get much independent casting done before she was 7 or 8 but a few years later...

    NFR Mat Classic XXXVI

Good luck at state, Coach! Wrestling has been a fantastic sport for my daughter. I wish we’d found it sooner (even though I was skeptical at first.) My kid wrestles guys in practice regularly but only girls in competition — though some smaller chicks seem to be pretty competitive with guys...

    Worlds Largest Slotted Tungsten Beads

I’m going to try some more to roll cast these with an 8wt single Spey line and a bobber but first forays ain’t great. 4mm/6wt is a neat trout rig (with no indicator) but I don’t know if it’ll get deep enough or be meaty enough in the winter.

    Worlds Largest Slotted Tungsten Beads

Funky funky mop bombs incoming. This might be peak Shimano. I’ve fished a lot of brass/pin jigs under tungsten weights on light braid. Fixed float, long rod. Pretty effective in the coast range but the tangles can get tiresome. Lot to like about a single big tung jig.

    College Football 2024

I just watched Chip Kelly at a press session from earlier in the week, talking about Smith: “He’s built for it.” Chip looked built for it too. Those fellas might be tough to stop.

    Favorite fish/story/trip of 2024?

Kid fishing has been my favorite for a while, but the category was very thin this year. Maybe only one day; bigger trips all got bumped by 17-year old life. Labor Day at G’mas, wading wet in the Allingham pool, 98f in the shade, she stuck a slurper with a long cast to the log on the other side...

What weight rod do you recommend to beginners in the PNW? (2024 version)

Going to second the shorter rod for kids. Or for any beginner, really. (Or for old farts with bad habits wanting accuracy more than distance, really. Ahem.)

    What's Catching You Fish?

Mopster Minnow is fly of the year in my box. Little brother even got a Fall River pelletbrooder, which must’ve been a rodeo on the 4wt I leant him. Mopster chenille is deeply funky.

    What's Catching You Fish?

Moppy stuff on Cactus Creek, out in a certain corner of the state. JV bulls, pretty bows, plump whities, and one hot steelhead — but if a guy can’t bother to retie wind-knotted 8lb then don’t bitch about a break-off, dummy. Glorious, but I bugged out of the lower part early ‘cause I’m not...

    Setup for kids (teens)

8’ 4wt Echo Base is a sweet rod! But, gotta admit, I gifted a young nephew a mix of some bargain crap this spring — shlepped right to my stoop by a Mr Bezos — and was impressed by how far $60-$80 will go on a new rig. I assume it’s all coming out of the same factory these days. There are some...
