Interestingly enough Otis was the only married character in the TV serious "The Andy Griffith Show". Andy, Barney, Aunt Bee, Guber, Gomer, the barber Floyd...all of them single. Otis (the town drunk) was the only character in that show that was married.... That made an impression on me as a...

    Show me your bass

Fly fishing with a popper can be accomplished in a "weedless" way using various methods. I fished "around" the sticks with no luck. As soon as I stopped worrying about snags... the fish bit almost every time.

    Show me your bass

I like "weedless". This term, to me, means any presentation that I can consistently cast into areas that 99% of anglers would get "snagged" 99% of the time. This is often the key to Bass fishing. Once the fish has been hooked, the "snags" often do not matter. It is the act of presenting an...

    Show me your bass

No doubt in my mind that if I were to camp there, and fish the early morning or late evening bite with a popper on a fly rod it would be epic.

    Show me your bass

There is a small lake with a campground on the way to Baker Lake that has stocked trout and Largemouth Bass. I got there, about noon Friday. Never fished it before. Put in my float tube.. gear fishing with unweighted green Senkos. My first thought was where do I start? Pilings, lily pads, sticky...

I used to sometimes use a piece of black velvet to wrap around such subjects. The black velvet completely soaks up the light and can result in a very dramatic image that isolates the subject. It is a fun technique to play with.

    Super El Nino

If anyone is interested... AI. Past El Niño Events in Southern California (1960s to Present) El Niño is a climate pattern characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific. This warming alters the subtropical jet stream, which often—though not always—steers powerful...

    Super El Nino

Back in the day the "computer models" were nowhere near as reliable. But after about five years, we would be expecting the next El Niño event. Tuna Crabs were a bad sign. Literally BILLIONS of them would show up in the kelp beds. Then came the "Sailors", first just a few, then millions of them...

    Super El Nino

Any hint of an El Niño was always troublesome. The thought of your income being erased for several months haunted every construction contractor and every commercial fisherman, every 5-7 years. Now a "super El Niño"? Dang that is worrisome.

    Super El Nino

From a guy that lived in So Cal from 1977 to 2017. Just my non scientific two cents. "El Niño" happens there every 5 to 7 years. Lots of rain and lots of surf, for about thee months. Ronald Reagan actually gave disaster relief for an El Niño event for businesses (construction, fishing etc). I...

Grilling salmon (other methods also allowed for discussion) - your go-to recipes and techniques

I was taught to observe the way the "layers" "flaked". Most fish filets have "layers" that begin to separate (when teased with a fork) as they become "cooked". Careful attention to that has helped me determine when to take them off the grill.
