    Philosomophizing about fishing

To me Fly fishing can be one of those peak experiences where you can be totally concentrated, mind and body connected. Playing music in a great group, sex with the right lover, and some other physical activities (skiing, basketball when I was a kid) have the same qualities. I'm not so sure...

    What are you listening to?

Coltrane is playing "What's New" Getz, Moonlight in Vermont. Great contrast between two of the best tenor players. I just heard a story about them doing a gig with their groups one after another in a New York Club in the 60"s. Coltrane finished his set and a group of young African American...

Do these temps seem unusually high to you?

I was just in Winthrop for the week. Ice off for maybe a week or two. Monday temp around 50 on Big Twin. Air temp in the 80's. On Thursday when I left water temp on little twin was 67 in the afternoon!! BTW, smaller lakes without aerators (like Campbell) winterkilled, partial kill on...

    Hiking in?

I just use an old Jansport pack I found at a used store. FatCat clips on top side to pack via a strap and the stripping apron snakes through the bottom of the frame. waders in bottom compartment bag of gear, reels in the top with lunch and water. Fins and net slip in the fat Cat seat...

    Lenice/Nunnally size of fish?

I'm think the regional biologist is doing the best he can with these lakes. I did like them more 35 years ago, but had a great day on Lenice last month fishing "naked" during a sustained chironomid hatch. Things have changed a lot in this state in those thirty years and the basin lakes have...

    Fly Rods On Commercial Flights?

I fly with my trombone in a gig bag (soft leather case) and haven't had any problems yet. It fits in the overhead bins. Last time I asked the Alaska if I could load in a earlier group and she put me on board with the first group of passengers.

    A true quality fishery 3/22 - 3/23/2023

Sad that the shallows are gone. I had another favorite lake near there. The mini Dry Falls that you would hike down the ladders to. It is basically dried up.

Olympia Oyster House was awesome when I was a kid for tiny little guys. Don't know if it is still around.

    NFR Wolf Encounters

Saw one last year near Meacham on I 84 between La Grande and Pendleton. It was a black one standing watching the traffic pass by at 70+mph. At first I thought it was a bear, that big, but way too skinny and regal. Made my day.

Gravel Parking Lot - It fills me with Joy!

Great report Shawn! Just spent three days in the basin with an old friend who is new to fly fishing and agree with you. It is about the community. Totally awesome seeing Billy, Buzzy and Engee! So much joy in having good fishing buddies. Hope to fish next to you some day. We missed...

Difference Between a Redside & Redband Rainbow Trout?

The biologist for Eastern Oregon (not central) told me that only the fish in the Great Basin were true redsides, not having any Steelhead, so the Wallowa, Powder, Imnaha etc. don’t have Redsides even if the fish in the Powder no longer have ocean access.
