    High Sierra prospecting and fishing.

The pictures from the stretch between Goodyears bar and Fiddle creek campground. Good fishing but access is challenging off of the side of the road. Would love to check out the prospecting, keep us informed.

    High Sierra prospecting and fishing.

Nice trip. I was fishing Sunday on the Yuba below Goodyear bar from different pullout points along 49. Very steep access and difficult wading. The first pullout I fished had a mining claim posted to a tree by the river so I left the gold.

    Early Fenwick

I’ve always heard great things about the early fenwick graphite but I’ve never had the chance to try one. I do enjoy early graphite rods by Winston fisher loomis etc.

How do you figure out what line weight mystery fly lines are?

I hold it above the scale in my hand. There is also some level tip on the front that is not supposed to be part of the overal weight but I just weigh about 30' and call it good.

    Early Fenwick

Have found quite a few nice rods at pawnshops over the years and bounced into a local one in town and found a very early Fenwick Faralite FF84. B on the Serial number so around 61' it was manufactured and carries hand written model and line wt, maylar wraps as well as a patent pending faralite...

How do you figure out what line weight mystery fly lines are?

weigh the first 30' , kitchen scale in grams works, and then convert to grains. This will give you the true wt rating of the line. This may not match what the original box would rate it at since most lines now are .5 to 1+ line wts heavy.

    PNW Local fly reel manufacturers?

I thought that lamson was in Redmond originally. Did they move to Bainbridge when Sage acquired them?

    High End Coolers vs. E-Coolers

I have a yeti cooler and it is awesome as a boat seat. Very sturdy and non sliding feet. Would buy it again for This purpose. I don’t find it keeps ice noticeably longer and it is heavy and lacks room for its size. Have just as good results from igloo Costco models. Even had a bear attack one...

    The original knife thread.

I’ve got a Gerber too. Thought it was cool in the 80’s when I bought it but never really found a good use for it. Tire deflator?

    Vintage Hardy

Cliff maybe take a look at the red agate reels posted in the classifieds. Not perfect but would most likely pair up with your rods nicely

    Vintage Hardy

I'm not sure when they went from leading to paint but the bump on the winding plate is what I was making my guess with. I like how the patina forms on the leaded reels and own a couple. I have also had some of the later painted ones. They don't seem to have the same quality to me and can...

Finally got out and fished some bamboo I picked up.

Still learning about bamboo rods and how they are built. I'm reading the book about E.C. Powell by Per Brandin and these are a couple pages showing the patents, I believe, from EC Powell and Winston and show how they were taking a little different approaches to hollow building rods. When I...

    Vintage Hardy

I’m not a hardy expert but I think it’s much newer than the 50’s. Maybe 70’s or 80's. I would look for an earlier one that’s leaded not painted or one of the very newer anodized ones.

Finally got out and fished some bamboo I picked up.

I didn’t verify it with Chris but it is labeled hb and I believe he and Reames mostly build hollow builds. It is not as light in hand as the sweetgrass but a bit more rod too it. I really enjoyed the east fork and wish I had more time to fish that area including the west fork. The reel is a 2...

Swap Hardy pawls into a Leland Classic Drift fly reel?

I’ve put a hardy pawl into a heddon imperial before. The pawl was too thick and I had to sand it down for it too fit so that dimension might be something to check. That reel is probably a direct knockoff and you could swap out the springs as well for an upgrade.

Finally got out and fished some bamboo I picked up.

I managed to pick up 4 or 5 bamboo rods over the winter but a bathroom remodel has kept me from getting them out fishing. Luckily I had a two week road trip planned that was going to involve some fishing. Left Auburn CA and Made it up to visit my sister in pullman. Caught the Cougars Vandals...

    Is this where it’s headed

Well I now have seen these being displayed and sold in a fly shop. I left them with a negative comment about it. Coming soon to a river near you.

    Is this where it’s headed

Haven’t really looked at a fishing magazine in years, proved again why, but thumbed through a fairly recent copy of flyfisherman. This add is what surprised me. Am I going to have to be surrounded by f@$%#Ing drones and people blasting there music tastes. WTF

    Classic reels

Looked it up on the intraweb but there seemed to be no reel ansewer. It has a very thin foot which does not fit all my reel seats well but great slide ring style.
