    Short dispatch from SC

That's a nice sized sunfish. They can be a lot of fun. The first fish I ever caught on a fly rod was a sunfish. When I was a kid my friends and I had a pond we would fish that had massive bluegills. I wish we had a few good pan fish lakes here in WA. Maybe we do and I just haven't found them yet.

    2022 Garden Thread

We have a plum tree that produces a ton. It’s in our front yard. My wife and I went out fishing one day late last summer and when we came home we found somebody had made off with almost all of the plums. They must have picked bucket loads and only left maybe six that were too high up to reach...

    2022 Garden Thread

Filled up my new raised bed last weekend. The peas are up. Still eating kale, broccoli, lettuce, and collards planted last year. Have tomatoes growing in the house. I hauled in and wheelbarrowed 8 yards of topsoil, mulch, and bark into my backyard last weekend. I felt kind of wiped out on Monday.

SFR Chasing down trailer light problems (on the tow vehicle side)

Most of the time I have had trailer light problems it has been the ground. As others have said, it can do weird things. Wire brush and dielectric grease are helpful.

    Awesome Dogs of PNW

My dog Cinnamon. When we got him he was matted, covered in scabs, and scared of anybody who came near him. We had him for a whole year before I was able to even touch him, but he eventually became our devoted buddy. He died last year. This is the first time I have been without a dog and/or cat...

I’m sorry but can anyone tell me what these are

Hard to even tell the rock type from the photo but could be plagioclase crystal twins.

Hiker in Montana apparently killed by a Grizzly

I did a solo backpacking trip in the Beartooths a couple years ago. I ran into 3 different people on the trail, all of who first asked me if I had a gun and/or bear spray (which I didn’t), and then went on to tell me stories of grizzly encounters in the area. I had thought the risk was overblown...

Backpacking in Eastern WA in May

The lower elevation hikes in the Olympics would be nice that time of year. The Enchanted Valley and Hoh River trails are nice. Also some nice hikes on the coast.

Gravel parking lot disparity... More report to follow

I have had good and bad days at both. Lake #1 generally has fewer people. While I prefer fishing with fewer people around I worry about break-ins when I'm the only one in the parking lot.

    Irish fortune

I always appreciate you sharing photos of the exotic fish you catch. Can you eat papio? I know there are fish in Hawaii that can carry ciguatera. Is that much of a problem?

    Agapetus sp.

Nice photos. Thanks for sharing. If you are in to rock collecting on the beach where the Russian flows into the ocean is a good spot to find glaucophane schist. Its a blue rock speckled with red garnets. I still have a piece I found there in the mid 80s. There is a large boulder of it next to...

    Favorite Backpacking gear...

My favorite gear is my Zamberlan Vioz boots. I am on my 4th pair and have walked hundreds of miles in them. Never got a blister, very comfortable. What an improvement from the other boots I have tried through the years.

    SFR Chickens..

My mother in law had a pair of geese. They were fierce. She had a mulberry tree in the yard where the geese were. The geese were white and when the mulberries were ripe their faces would be stained purple and they would rush at me hissing with their tongues sticking out. She kept a stick by the...

    Jetty trips

I fished the jetty at Westport once and wouldn't do it again. Too treacherous. The fishing wasn't good either, but that may have just been my poor jetty fishing skills. I saw some others who did ok who ventured further out than me. As my friend and I were in the the parking lot at the state park...

NFR What podcasts are you listening to?

I like the Criminal podcast. My wife and I like to listen to it when we are on long car trips. My favorite episode is called Ten Thousand Feet In The Air about a guy who high jacks a plane. Lots of other good ones as well.
