    SFR Superstitions?

The only superstition I can remember is that I am never about to take my last (ski) run. When I get down to the base lodge I might decide that that was my last run.

    NFR Humor (No political jokes)

On that same train (but in a different compartment) a woman in the top bunk was preparing for bed. Unbeknownst to her, the curtain enclosing her bunk had come open, exposing her to view from the man in the bottom bunk on the opposite side of the aisle. First, she removed her wig and placed it...

    Deschutes near Redmond

If the water temp is still low the Crooked can be fun. Start as soon as the river looks fishable and fish/drive your way up toward the dam. I've also gone to the public campground (in Terrebonne??) near Steelhead Falls, driven in as far as one could go, and then walked down to the river and...

    Deschutes near Redmond

I've fished in the section that curves around Eagle Crest and found it to be great - especially when the evening hatch pops. You can drive in and park near the restaurant, then walk down the wide dirt path. The area at the base of the path is shallow and quite fishable, but if you walk...

    Floating Craft in Oregon

Here in Hood River we have lots of folks out on the big river in all types of personal watercraft... kiters, windsurfers, wingfoilers, SUPs... you get the picture. SUPs, defined as 'boats', are required to carry emergency whistles. This is a good idea for anyone who floats. It's a lot easier to...

Have they been seen anywhere around here?

    Deals at online Retailers

I have a handful of Lamson reels and haven't had any problem with any of them. (I just realized I responded to a VERY old post!)

    Invasive Species Concerns

My sweetie just bought really slick new Patagonia waders (I'm somewhat jealous), and included with the packaging was a card warning about the dangers of transferring invasive species from one fishery to another. We have never done the whole bleach bath thing (for wading boots) nor do we...

The Mountain Whitefish, aka Short Fin Grayling thread

I've caught my share of whiteys on both the Yak and the Deschutes. I've noticed that when indicator nymphing for trout that I have to adjust my awareness of what constitutes a strike. (I suppose that's a whole 'nother story about how I somehow expect the indicator to flash in neon colors as if...

    Yearly check ups... please

I echo what's been said, and the good thoughts towards Albula! Some months back I came down with prostatitis, which (among other things) caused my PSA to rocket to just below 40! After a course of antibiotics I asked for a follow-up referral to a urologist, which led to my requesting an MRI...

    Yearly check ups... please

I'm not sure why so many docs shy away from referring their patients for testing. It's not as though they have to pay for it. The moral of these stories is that you must be your own advocate. If you feel that (additional) testing is important, insist on it! Nobody else will!

    Yearly check ups... please

And for you 'vintage' members... don't forget to have your PSA checked! Statistically speaking, nearly everyone over 65 will have some type of prostate cancer. My understanding is that most prostate cancers are slow moving and entirely curable - a term that is almost never used in regard to...

    Flip Flop (Yakima River)

Here's what I know about smolt 'pulses'. Every time I had planned to float, some guy in a small office became aware of my intentions and scheduled a flow release. For a while, it never failed!

    Got it. Thx!

    Flip Flop (Yakima River)

Unfortunately the article is behind a pay wall. Perhaps I misunderstood, but I thought that flip flop was a phenomenon caused by the flow changes... not the flow changes themselves.

    Flip Flop (Yakima River)

Can anyone explain how the increased or decreased Yakima River flows create Flip flop, and exactly what it is/does?

Electronic licenses in Washington next year

Consider this exciting revelation: The new electronic system is being brought to you by the same folks that pioneered such advances as licenses printed in disappearing ink!
