    Hatchery Wild CoExist Brood Stock

This is false. Alsea winter steelhead release numbers are not dwindling … they have increased since the late 1990s, consistent with guidance in the 2014 CMP, which raised smolt releases from 120K to 140K while increasing the proportion of broodstock (see data below). Also false: smolt to...

Help with a Fly Logic rod

That’s the full series. Like all rods, the specs were above the cork grip, but the epoxy they used tended to peel. I rewrapped the guides on my 1307

What's your favorite mono running line & why?

The rep was clearly wrong - just as you note, the lines behaved differently. Pure Fishing bought both Berkley and Stren, added orange dye to their Big Game line, and discontinued the Stren Catfish formulation.

What's your favorite mono running line & why?

Untrue, definitely not in 40 lbs. The color is identical, handling is not. I could tell instantly from stiffness and coils (from 4 rods rigged in the boat) when I grabbed the one rod strung with orange Big Game. Tossed it at the end of salmon season. I’d gladly give away what’s left of the...

DIY fly fishing in Torres del Paine

I have fished all over Chile without a guide. However, in Torres del Paine, I was too distracted by the scenery and annoyed by the wind shredding my tent to bother with fishing.

HELP, Landowner Blocking Historical Access Point to the Miami River, How To Proceed

This road has been gated for 5+ years now … I have an old research site back there, on state forest. The state isn’t motivated to open it because of past problems with dumping/squatting/vandalism. There is (or was …) access over the NW ridge, but it’s a pretty long drive.

What's your favorite mono running line & why?

Non-circular (oval, flat) shooting lines work great in a dry setting (boat), ok in stillwater or in shallow water with limited current, but not great in knee-deep moving water. They have a tendency to orient perpendicular to current, which impedes release and decreases shootability. It is...

Here’s some stuff from this millennium … though as always, what really matters in rock and roll is what the kids are listening to, music too new and off-chart for us geezers to know about

    Durable Wading Boot Recommendations?

As someone else in the hefty club (6’5” 250 lbs), there’s one disadvantage to boots lasting too long. Over time the cushioning midsole breaks down and support goes to hell. When I compare an old heavily used pair to new of the same style, the difference is obvious. I’ve been satisfied with...

What's your favorite mono running line & why?

Magically small is when the knotted line deforms when seated, to minimize air spaces, so the knot ends up smaller and tighter. two random internet diagrams to illustrate

What's your favorite mono running line & why?

I’d be interested to hear if you can get a surgeon’s knot to seat very small (smaller than one might expect) with 30 lb Prospec. It happens for me with various nylon monofilaments, where the knot seats and almost fuses itself into a tidy little package, but I’ve not had as good of luck with...

    wading screws?

I use a mix of Kold Kutter screws around the perimeter and outer toe/heel for wear resistance, and alumabite cleats under the ball of foot for extra grip.

What's your favorite mono running line & why?

Running lines tend to be heavier than tippet. The “best” loop knot for running lines balances strength and profile. For example, a 2-turn surgeon’s knot isn’t as strong as a 3-turn surgeon, but the 2-turn cinches down to a tighter package, especially with nylon monofilament. I’m ok with that...
