Then there's Whitworth size bolts if you really want to confuse them. You might push it too far though if you say anything about grid vs. ground distance.

What's in your emergency/back-up boat box?

A handheld VHF for marine waters if the boat doesn't already have a fixed one.

Turbidity is independent of color. It's just a measurement of scattered light. I've seen samples with a lot of bubbles throw off turbidity measurements because the bubbles would scatter light resulting in a reading that was erroneously high. Turbidity readings do highly correlate with...

    Competition breeds excellence

I won't take my friends who are casual fishermen steelheading with me or let them know where I go (other than vague generalities). Does that make me competitive? *shrug*

Seriously, if an extra mouse click or two is worth complaining about then things are pretty good. I remember tracking down and going through USGS' annual "Water Resources Data" reports (or just as likely a cropped off photocopy of the stations I was interested in or worse yet, a fax) to...

    Ryobi 40V battery adapter

Milwaukee makes an similar USB charger adaptor for their 18v (M18) batteries as well. My guess is they don't add a USB charger output to eliminate a point for water intrusion and also the USB is 5 volts so the associated circuitry to step down voltage and limit current would make the the...

    NFR Wolf Encounters

I've had a lot in Alaska but this one was kinda fun. In late summer in 2020, I was piloting my boat down to Washington from southeast Alaska. On my first night on my trip, I was enjoying the solitude as I stayed in a small cove on the west side of Prince of Wales Island when I heard a wolf...

    What are you listening to?

Oh well! The genius of Peter Green, part one has one of the all-time best guitar riffs ever. Part two is brooding, introspective and melodic. So much accomplished in so little time.

    Outboard motor ride height?

Putting a cam-lock plug in from the exterior is a good way to lose it. Garboard plugs screw in from the exterior, but they are secure and usually aren't removed while running to drain the bildge.

    outboard cooling system troubleshooting

Do check for obstructions in the intake. Is that pieces of a gasket or perhaps plating coming off the interior of the pump housing? That housing looks very well worn. I'd probably replace the entire pump.

His clothing makes enough noise, a few decibels less sound is practically immaterial.

    outboard cooling system troubleshooting

Check the pee hose. Pull it off of the nipple (pee fitting) where it exits the lower cowling. I've had more than one outboard plug or dribble because sand/salt accumulated right there at the very end where it gets constricted by the nipple (ID nipple < ID hose).

    Favorite ling cod recipes?

My mom used to broil it with some black pepper, sliced onion and tomato on top. Spoon a little Hollandaise over it on the table. Yum.
