When "trolling" I'm not just moving at a constant speed with a single presentation. Normally I use two flies at once and I will most definitely use different sinking lines to cover different holding depths. I'll also twitch the line or retrieve it a few times then let it drift back. Or...

I'm another fan of trolling stillwaters.... for the same reasons mentioned by others. Besides.... for me it works quite well.

I probably tie more WBs than any other pattern. That one would be fairly easy if you knew the ingredients. But if you don't tie flies, it may be a problem finding a shop that sells that particular pattern. It doesn't look like something that is universal.

I've never caught a small smallmouth trout (whitefish) and always wondered why. You caught a four inch guy so I guess there are small ones out there.... but for me it is danged rare to catch small ones.

I'd be more concerned about someone killing wild trout in a C&R fishery and hiding them in their beer cooler ... which I've seen happen in the past. That was before the days of smart phones with cameras and they grabbed their cooler and took off when they saw me.

Yup, I've watched trout "mouth" items floating downstream just to spit them out when they discovered they were not edible... which makes me wonder if they are checking for some manner of give to the item. Obviously a small stick doesn't not have the same texture as does a free floating...

I can certainly see coating a feather wing case as those on a GRHE.... I use Sally Hansen to hold the wing case together. But I see a lot of patterns where the entire fly has a thick clear coat so I started to wonder if there is a fish catching advantage to adding the coating.

Ah, I didn't think about making the pattern more durable. As long as it doesn't work as a fish repellent then adding the coating for durability makes sense.
