Day Trip to the Lady M

Oddly enough, I've been to where most those photos were taken. That river taught me flyfishing. And it is one of the most beautiful rivers I've ever fished nor ever will fish at my age. Thanks for the time trip.

    SBS Tom's Jiggy Craw

They look good to me too .... but humans don't count. As long as they look like something to eat to a fish then they are a success.

    Wallowa Lake question.

Did you see the Wallowa Lake Monster? As a very deep lake it of course also has a monster. .... at least it did. I don't think anyone has claimed to have seen it in a number of decades but it was supposed to be there.

    Metolius River hints?

The trout will be close to where the bulk of the whitefish are holding but usually in the faster water. If you were catching whitefish with you nymphs, you were using patterns the trout would also take. But what the heck, large whitefish are fun and some folks don't even manage to catch...

    Wallowa Lake question.

It was decades ago when I fished the inlet and the shoreline east of the store. I did quite well with elk hair caddis. But like I said, this was decades ago. I do know they still plant it. I'd give it a try.

    Metolius River hints?

During all the decades I fished the river, it was never, ever too high to fish. It's a true spring creek that flows out of the ground.

    Metolius River hints?

Usually, the smaller the target nymph pattern, the better. I always use two when I fish the Met. The lower nymph is usually a heavy weighted golden stonefly pattern. The target (upper) nymph is usually in the 16-18 size and tied with a bit of sparkle ... like a Sparkle Pupa.

    Wretched Mess in West Yellowstone

They've been mentioning the event in the Blue Ribbon Flies newsletter but I didn't know it was such a big deal until the last issue of the newsletter.... otherwise I would have mentioned it sooner.

    Wretched Mess in West Yellowstone

If you happen to be in West Yellowstone on the 5th or 6th of Sept, you may want to check this out: https://www.wretchedmessfest.com/ This only the second one they've held so it's bound to grow in the future. I'd go if it was so far away.

    Hostile Fisheries

I didn't know East has fallen from grace. I haven't fished it for years and years. Westfly and the local fly club outings up there were a hoot. I remember one when Bob Borden's son hooked a fish and an osprey came down and grabbed it while it was hooked and tried to fly off...

    Hostile Fisheries

If you're a dry fly or die kind'a fly angler, the Met is not your friend. I learned nymph fishing on the Met so I get along quite fine with the river.

    Hostile Fisheries

In the 50 some odd years I've been fly fishing, there's really only one fishery that hates me with a passion. It's Crane Prairie Reservoir in Oregon. At one time or another, all my fishing buddies have caught some very large rainbows at the place but not me. I don't get it. I use the...
