    James Reid, Bamboo Rodmaker

Thanks for sharing Dave, I have had some communication with James and ordered a rod in 2020 and he had been awesome to deal with. My rod is scheduled to be built in 2024-25 and look forward to receiving it. This order also inspired me to build my own rods as 5 years is a long time to wait. He...

    A couple Phillipsons chasing bulls

Thanks for posting Dave, I had a phase we’re all I fished were grey ghosts, lord iris, muddy iris for like two years in the mid to early eighties. I would tie the wing section in hand with thread and then tie them in all all once. I hand a customer that would order 5 dozen grey ghosts every year...

    Bamboo Spey rod #4

I took measurements from some of my rods and used them as a template. After my third rod I have a good feel for what I want taper wise. I have been playing around with scalloping to see how that changes the action. My first two rods were 9 wghts and my last rod ended up being a 7/8 which was my...

    Butchering your own animal

My experience is let hang for 5 days as long as the weather cold. Wipe if down with vinegar and water. As far a butchering goes I save the prime cuts and the rest is burger and breakfast sausage and us pork fat. I also will make some jerky.

    Turkey Day Steelhead

About 6-7 years ago I took my daughter out for a early steelhead trip to one of my favorite haunts. I put her on this seem that you don’t have to cast very far and it was her first time fishing sink tips on a Spey rod. I asked her if see wanted some coaching and after a few casts I realized she...

    Nice mail Day

I’m not sure how to describe the term over dampen. I have cast a lot of different bamboo rods and how the rods tracks on the back cast and forward cast is how I judge a rods performance. It’s very easy to see on the forward delivery of the line will dip downward and this is very pronounced on...

    Nice mail Day

I will bring it to the next fling along with some of my latest builds. Hopefully I will have some longer single handers built up by them.

    Nice mail Day

He also built this off of a Edwards rod that Syd Glasso used to use for Cutthroat fishing on the coast. And as I learn more about rod building this rod tracks perfectly and does not over dampen which I suspect I could be hollowed. But as I have also learned is not to dig to much into how each...

    Nice mail Day

I haven’t cast it yet due to working on my own rods. Not sure about the rod weight or if it’s hollow built. It has a nice swell on the butt section and I will mic the ferrules. I do know that the ferrules fit perfectly and it’s made with components from old stock. When you look at his rods they...

    Nice mail Day

I put it together and it’s feels awesome not sure if a 4 or 5 will make it sing but Mark makes amazing rods. I will cast it tomorrow and see what is the right line for the rod.

    It’s here!

That’s a score I think it’s to heavy for your rod and it will balance mine better😀

    Letcher Lambuth's Spiraled Cane rod?

When I received my Anglers Workshop book I was a little confused as I thought I was buying Letchers book and realized it was from 1908 and it was the inspiration for Letchers book. Now I have both and have a ton of studying to do. The original is a wealth of history and definitely gives me some...

    rod builders

Wrapping rods is not that hard you just need a few basic tools that are not very expensive. But it gets down to what you want, if you want a custom rod with fancy jewelry it will cost you. I have a friend that was mentored and he’s wrapping some nice rods now and I will reach out to him and get...

Good point Brian maybe we should head down and help Evan out with this.

    Evan's boat projects: floor replacement

I love this stuff Evan the rivets are what we call button head fasteners. To replace those is not easy with out the right tools or the right person. A rivet gun and bucking bar are needed. Pull rivets are not hard to replace and you can go to harbor freight to get the tools for this process. I...

    Letcher Lambuth's Spiraled Cane rod?

I picked up a fun old book which as I read into it a wealth of knowledge and Dave if possible I would like to take a look at Lecther’s book. Working on the jig this weekend for glueing up the spiral rod. And I would like to thank Tim Cottage for sending me some great info which helped get me...
