    Methow Steelhead Opening 2024

That was probably a lousy example (late announcement) I kinda regret posting it. I took it not so much as a "locals first" and more as a individual fisherpeople before commercial exploitation/guides/trip advertisements. Some of the other requests were more reasonable and were also ignored...

    Methow Steelhead Opening 2024

I'm friends with one of the locals - he told me the locals BEGGED WDFW to hold off notification of the opening to give the locals at least a day or two of quality fishing before the masses descended. They were of course told to pound sand.

    Bad outing for FlyFish Dan

"You want to go old school, does anyone remember Sharp Steelie?" :ROFLMAO::p Sharpie was a peach, from his floss fly to his extravagant claims of success on low water Summers. He wasn't a bad dude . . . . he came up to me at the Sandy Spey clave years ago and began his introduction by...

Things seen in Scotland... I will be back!

Thanks Shaun . . . congrats on many fronts. Really like the "Fishing Etiquette" sign- but I suspect if someone posted that on WA waters it would be shot full of bullet holes within a week.

    Bad outing for FlyFish Dan

Kinda feel for FFD, it's a tough crowd with a lot of opinions. Putting yourself out on YouTube is like putting a big "hit me" sign on your back and running around in a rowdy drunken crowd. No matter what you do someone's gonna take a shot. Dan's reaching out to folks wanting to learn...

    barred owls

Every time I hear another one of these stories I cringe. The latest was our stalwart WDFW supports of native fish and wildlife killing off the Smallmouth Bass in a particular stretch of the upper Spokane river. Neat idea except that adjacent Smallmouth populations in the river will repopulate...

    Cooler woes-and a solution!

Have a friend who's an avid off grid camper. Sleeps in his truck and powers everything with his portable solar panels. He swears by this brand for a efficient minimal power consumption camping fridge. Pricey but what I'll go with when I get my Project M camper setup...

    Saltwater small boat choices.

Guessing Terrova + spotlock will become your best friend. After experiencing one I've bought mine and hoping to get it installed on my Stryker before Sept.

Welded loop broke. Re-weld or snell knot?

Have tried all of the above and recently found a solution I really like. Strip the coating and use the core (either braided or mono) to tie on a large tippet ring. Coat the knot (I typically use an improved clinch) and you're good to go. So far haven't had one fail, either fresh or salt use.

    Clearwater on fire

Sad news - I've been visiting this river for 30+ years and this stretch is some of my favorite water to fish. https://www.lmtribune.com/northwest/fires-roar-near-clearwater-river/article_5bfe2274-381d-50f2-b2ef-c8c0acad348d.html

    SFR 100s that used to be 90s that used to be 80s - - - -

For a local example, just look at the rise in AC in Western Washington. I've been around since the 80s and didn't even consider the need for AC until the last 5-6 yrs. Not just me . . . the tech I talked to from CM Heating the other day said the increased interest in AC has really exploded...

Another WDFW WTF South Fork Skykomish

I appreciate your thoughtful response Charles. I know that the dept needs to meet # goals for Chinook - that and political factors (comanagers, etc) are the drivers for this and other closures. What bothers me is that other stakeholders are consulted (commercials, tribes) while it seems the...

Another WDFW WTF South Fork Skykomish

I'm still scratching my head on this one. WDFW is closing the South Fork Skykomish above Sunset Falls July 1st. The falls are impassible to anadromous fish, but they're trucking "native" Summer Chinook up there (where they are -not- native) as part of the recovery plan. I personally don't...

    Float Tube Rearview Mirror?

A tiny camera would be a good start, but what I really want is a proximity detector like we have in cars (beeping speeds up as you approach an object). A rearend collision in a float tube, esp. at night, is not the sort of entertainment I'm there for. It's kinda funny after the fact, but...

Single Spey Traditional or Improved style

So much confusing BS around spey casting, everyone wants to reinvent (or rename) the wheel. Simon helped me refine my single spey probably about 25 years ago, and he emphasized NOT dipping the rod and getting a flat landing under tension to keep a tight loop by only lifting the rod as high as...

    Anchors away…

My fave (and cheap) is the mesh square with 4 metal eyelets that I use when I hike in with my packraft. Fill it with rocks and hook it up to the carabiner and you're good to go.
