Can we have a blue gill thread?

Today was a funky day - I was trying to target bluegill and kept catching SMBs instead. Did find a few little blues though

    Disrespectful attitudes towards wildlife.

This is comedy gold. I wish I could like this post more than once

Mola Mola are weird, but also interesting.

I love sunfish/mola mola! I spent a decent chunk of my time as a kid fishing offshore on my father’s sportfisher. We used to see sunfish pretty frequently off Southern California, Mexico. I would get really excited thinking I had spotted a shark and my dad would glass it and say “sunfish.”...

Can we have a blue gill thread?

Hey - you could have mitts like Shaquille O’Neal. That fish might be a slab! Regardless it’s pretty. On top water to boot. Bonus points!

Redington Field Kits - user feedback ?

I bough the 7 wt “bass” kit and have had it out a bit. Rod casts fine and the reel is fine as well for my “truck rod extra boat rod” use case expectations. Reserving judgement but so far I am not keen on the line it came with (warmwater quickshooter 7wt). It def seems “kinkier” than the Rio...

Can we have a blue gill thread?

Yes! I caught a bunch today as well. A little yellow soft hackle worked. As did a little rust colored leach. The perch were taking turns with the bluegill, seeking out my fly.

    Balkans?

I just returned from Europe last week. For Bulgaria, consider looking up this guy: https://mankovflyfishing.com/ I didn’t watch the YouTube links you provided, but it is possible Stan might be featured in it. He primarily fishes Bulgaria, but gets around the Balkans as a whole as well based on...

    Solo fishing

I fish solo 90% + these days. 99% of the time I carry only my rapier wit for protection. Once in a while when I’m fishing in grizzly bear country I carry bear spray. I mean if I’m going to get mauled I owe it to the bear to spice it up a little, right?

    Good eats near PDX

When in Portland, Kann is an excellent date-night option. https://kannrestaurant.com/ Reservations required though they do have a bar that might support walk-ins. Firehouse as mentioned by @clarkman used to be another good choice though I haven’t been there in years. I think my brother’s...

Women’s fly fishing numbers are growing..

My grandmother, mother, and aunts all fly fished well into their senior years. Some - Aunt V in particular - were excellent fly tiers to boot. One of my aunts gifted me her trusty Winston 6 wt. After a bad ankle fracture ended her wading days, another aunt (Aunt S) deemed herself a “float...

    Dismantling of the USFS

Your mileage may vary, but I would personally steer clear from deducing from the data being shown that manmade climate change was far worse in the 19th and early 20th century. CO2 is release into the atmosphere through both human activities and natural processes. 90% or so of global CO2...

    Dismantling of the USFS

Last year’s “big bill” - with Senator Mike Lee’s enthusiastic support - had a number of sections designed to maximize resource extraction. Putting aside the cornucopia of mining and oil extraction sections, there were also a number of logging-friendly sections. Just one example of a section...

As the weather starts to improve, who is daydreaming about fishing‽

So stoked! I plan to learn how to jig steamers with a mono rig. I descended deep into a fly box reorg effort last month that I think sets me up better. Also considering a new float tube - do not have one at present. I even bought myself a new surfboard & fly rod carrier (aka car). Full time...

    Reliable Ro

Thank you! This is super helpful. I have not used nearly that amount of patience. I do have a smaller weighted worm pattern similar to the bottom two patterns and have managed to accidentally catch some big carp by just leaving those on the bottom for a long time…sounds like I should try similar...

    Reliable Ro

I have never fished a senko before - i don’t gear fish so it has just never been something I have tried to date. I have some patterns that I believe kinda mimic a rubber worm. They historically have fished ok (did catch one really nice LMB last summer with the green and brown one that seems...

    Pass Lake crayfish

PSA on crawdads in Western WA: try not to keep/kill the native Signal Crayfish species and instead focus energy on the Red Swamp Crayfish. Some eeejit bucket biologist introduced the larger red swamp crayfish species during the last century and they are big-time negatively impacting the...

    Pass Lake crayfish

Wasting bacon 🥓!?! This feels like a dreadful misuse of a precious resource. My pro tip: Cook the bacon, eat it, then go to the body of water where you want to catch crawdad. Use almost anything else - I don’t even care what - to catch them. The bacon will sustain you in your hunt. You’ll feel...

    NFR F150 & Ecoboost

(Clearing throat for rant on car tech….) Ok I don’t know who designed the “tire pressure warning indicator” electronics but they should be tied up in the town square and pelted with rotten fruit and veggies. This is my third vehicle (spanning two brands) where it will fire false warnings if...
