    DIY Flybox?

You can buy self adhesive ripple foam to replace the foam in fly boxes where it has worn out. I use this in Altoids tins to create fly boxes for specific purposes. Easy to stick in a pocket. Not so suitable for streamers, though!

    Lake Ballinger

I live a few minutes from Ballinger and used to take my grandson canoing there when he was little. I know they plant it with a ton of "catchables" and wondered if they survive long enough to make the lake an option for an evening in a float tube, when I don't have time to drive to a bit wilder...

Don't be afraid to ask and share

Many years ago, not long after the Cedar river reopened after being closed for several years, I was fishing downstream swinging a streamer under overhanging branches and through deeper runs picking up the occasional nice fish that no longer seem to be there today. I came around one bend and...

Strange, weird or odd or whatever beach finds thread….

There is, or was, a heron rookery right on campus at UW. I've witnessed the havoc bald eagles can wreak on heron nests. The ground beneath is littered with feathers bones and dead chicks at times. The adults make no effort to defend the nests. The evoliutionary theory around the origin of...

    Trout and their lairs

In the interest of keeping this thread alive, I'll post another one. This from a tiny spring creek somewhere in the great state of Montana. There must be thousands of places like this in Montana. I wish I had time to find them all! The current pushes up agains the grassy hummock on the...

Hiker in Montana apparently killed by a Grizzly

I lived in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem in the 1970s and early 80s and spent all my free time in the backcountry. Neither I nor anyone I knew ever saw a grizzly. No one was concerned about grizzlies then, except for the concern about their being extirpated from the Park and surrounding...

    Trout and their lairs

This little west side stream had only ever yielded little guys for me, but this 12 incher was a relative monster for this little pool.

Backpacking in Eastern WA in May

Things are going to be snowy anywhere you go in the mountains at that time. There are some hike-in lakes in the Columbia basin that might provide both hiking and fishing.

    Wading Boot Insoles?

Under the best of circumstances, it will often take months for the pain to subside completely. This makes Ive's recommendations so valuable. Learn what you can, wear proper shoes with inserts/insoles, and do physical therapy (stretching, etc.). The pain is always worse in the morning and as...

    Skwala Patterns

I used to fish the Yakima a lot during the skwala hatch and have a whole box devoted to the nymphs and dries. I haven't had that fly box out in years, I'm sorry to say... Here are a couple that I liked. They are basically variations on a stimulator, but tied on a straight shank hook. I also...

    Wading Boot Insoles?

I've had a couple bouts with plantar fasciatis - NO FUN!!! On the advice of my doc, I started wearing "Superfeet" insoles in all of my shoes that will accommodate them, including wading boots. I haven't had a problem in years. I also started a regimen of stretching my feet leaning in against...

    Trout and their lairs

I love teasing fish out from under cut banks. Sometimes it is amazing how little they will move from under cover to take a fly. If the fly isn't ticking the grass above its head as it drifts by the fish won't take it. Here's one from a stream in Idaho. Water flowing right to left; cutt was...

    Trout and their lairs

I started out calling this thread "Trout and their lies" as in where they "lie" in the stream, but I thought it might create the wrong impression! :) I tend not to take many pictures of fish anymore; after a while they all look the same. But, I love to see pictures of fish holding water...
