    Guns

What a great example of thread drift. To the OP's question: Good on ya for taking a class and learning some stuff! It was good for me years ago, and I should probably do so again. What pistol to buy? Well, Glock's just smash my broken thumb joint, I can't even get through a single magazine...

Non-Fly Seeking intel on Lake Roosevelt

Spring Canyon near Grand Coulee is a NPS campground, I've stayed there a couple times and it's nice Up high Marcus is nice. Any of the NPS campgrounds that are open are generally well maintained and feature pretty nice sites. There's a sweet little CG at the northport city park but don't tell...

In defense of the fly fishing club

Civic organizations have been in decline most of my adult life. The 2000 book Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam documented the late 20th century decline in these organizations and associated social connections. Expanding work expectations, later maturing families, and electronic media beginning...

I am continually amazed at the efforts folks put into creating absolutely hideous shit.

    Team Saturn?

I've maxxon tubes on my cataraft. Maxxon stuff is generally made from Chinese PVC where Saturn is (or at least was recently) made from european pvc. Part of the cost savings of a pvc boat is they are glued together rather than stitched or welded. PVC degrades in sunlight, so is inherently a...

    Wireless kill switches

Does anyone use them? Does anyone use the wired one on your boat already?

Are fly fishing magazines a thing again?

I confess I'm a print media junkie. I seek out places where I have no cell service, thus I need some magazines to read or reread. Fly-fishing print media presents some of the best imagery today, maybe because fly fishing locations are so beautiful. So, it's been Fly Fish Journal, the Drake...

    SFR Vermont recreational use pass

Discover Pass here in Washington, though it's not just decline in hunting and fishing, but a direct cuts to Parks and other resource agency funding that led to it's establishment.

What have you done for your boat lately?

Last carp trip of 2025 cut short because of water pump failure, inspection shows impeller serviceable but housing junk. Parts round two should arrive this weekend, I’ll change em out, put it back together, new lower unit lube and get ready for spring. Yamaha 40 4 stroke 2002 vintage btw. Maybe...

    NFR. Time to hang 'em.

Over this-a-way the hummingbirds fled for warmer climes weeks ago. As have the doves, and most of the bluebirds. Nothing but falling yellow leaves and a gazillion chickadees now.

    Canadian retailers

I went to a Canadian flyfishing retailer looking for some stuff. I saw this notice: “As of August 29, 2025, U.S. Customs has imposed tariffs of up to 35% on all products not made in the United States, depending on the country of origin. Any applicable tariff costs will be added to any...

    Worrisome Trend?

While I question the numbers he cites, the decline is real. And across all "consumptive" outdoor activites as evidenced by decline in Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson funding in Washington. "Non-consumptive" outdoor activites seem to be growing, though. There is at least some policy...

NFR Things I Never Knew In My Family

You've much to be proud of. The soldiers of the 442nd served with honor and distinction during the war, and after. Many from Washington joined and served their country and their community, always honoring their comrades. One from Spokane, (and a subject of Facing the Mountain) Fred Shiosaki...

    Diesel heaters?

Well, Ive, as you know I installed a Cheap Chinese Diesel Heater unit now three years ago in the Candyvan. I did what I could do to quiet the fuel pump, putting it on a flex mounting and such. It really doesn't bother us much. The fan is a bit noisy but as you say it's kinda white noise...

Not just local fly shops are closing (not that Orvis is anything but a clothing store now)

You'll get no argument from me. And I think oddly small low overhead shops may be the future for these niche businesses as multiline retailers in big boxes collapse. It seems maybe endless expansion is no longer the key to staying alive as a business?

Not just local fly shops are closing (not that Orvis is anything but a clothing store now)

I think Orvis is reading the handwriting on the wall pretty well. Backing out of the "fashion" markets where everyone from Bean to North Face to Filson for chrissakes is trying to enter, and going back to fly fishing and wingshooting markets, following their "endorsed" lodge and guide programs...
