NFR "The Hypocrite" TGR film about advocacy/fossil fuels/Outdoor State

I can think of a few places in Idaho that are perhaps a little bit greater than the stuff around the proposed wind project. (No offense to sage grouse or the memory of Japanese internment.)

    Personal Protection

I get the impulse on armed defense but I think it takes serious training to be solid. Some guys are kidding themselves. Sort of like chainsaws on construction sites, we don't always give the tool enough respect.

Basic Survival Skills for a Flyfisherman Just Learning to Swim

Willingness to learn new skills as an adult is a great mindset, and one I wish I had more often. I’m not a trained swimmer, and it has limited some of my outdoor pursuits. That said, the worst wading situations I can imagine would still be very bad for the best swimmers. Logs, cold water, heavy...

TFO Pro II vs. Fenwick Boron X

When various joints were all in better shape I thought I could cast a TFO about 1:1 on dollars per foot. Buy a rod on sale for $80 and go try to toss the whole line. Depending on your casting, you might find a deal on a used one that could still get you into that ballpark. The trout won’t care...

Non-Fly I need a spinning rod that'll do it all!

I’m sure there are situations when 2oz would be helpful but we’ve found plenty of fish with 3/4 or 1oz pancake weights. Steelhead gear works fine. Shimano/daiwa reels, braid, whatever rod is on sale, 9.5’ or 10’ is nice for bobber n’ jig if that’s part of it.

    Elk River?

Excellent floating available on the Elk, fine for pontoons if you’re careful. Easy shuttles, miles of river, mucho trouts. Lots of wading options if you want to bust brush off logging roads. The famous stuff gets pressure; if 12” cutts sound good you don’t have to see many footprints. Bulls...

    Elk River?

It’s a great trip, and closer than you think. Agree with Salmo on all points, including ski condo. A couple of the best-known tribs are restricted on access now, but we’ve found plenty of water within easy day’s travel if you aren’t floating. Some of the stuff over the hill, in Alberta, will...

    NFR NFL 2023 Season

I don’t follow the NFL very much, but I wonder what it would take to get Vita Vea and Penei Sewell to play rugby for the US Eagles. Could we give them, say, Tonga and Samoa? Also, if Baker Mayfield can learn to kick we could probably throw in Oklahoma.

    The good boat deal thread

I’m sorry to hear this. Nice folks and a solid operation. But we were their last rental boat off the river a couple of years ago, on July 7th, when the river was dropping really fast. Makes a short rental season, even on a great river. Maybe we’ll buy an IK, and get an extra-big breakfast next...

    5 Flies

Banker’s hours, for sure. Or whoever starts when the afternoon thunder starts rocking. Bartenders? Bitterroot lightning up close puts ‘conscious contact with the higher power’ in a different perspective.😗

    5 Flies

I sort of go to the border lands for dry fly opportunity, and last year, early June, Shoshone county, the five were: Clarks stone, 10 Soft hackle, drake, 8 Soft hackle, tan, 16 Found link, rusty 14 Buzzball, 16

    College Football 2023

Nothing personal toward our northern cousins — honest! —but on this one I’d be happy to see things get lopsided. Ducks are rolling. This might be the year. 🦆

Winter run timing and other questions

This has me nostalgic. One of the last winter fish I caught on a fly was on the Applegate, in front of my then-pregnant, now-ex wife. We were down there for Shakespeare, and just goofing off for a few hours. Nice fish took a heavy nymph while she sat at a picnic table. She decided winter...

Winter run timing and other questions

About 15 years since I’ve swung flies in the winter, after few years of effort before that with very limited success. I hate to be negative, and I’m sure lots of people do well in the winter with spey gear if they get dialed in. My experience is just that east side summer fish are a lot easier...

Winter run timing and other questions

Solid advice from Rob Allen, as usual. My steelhead fishing is ‘topography’ driven, with some huffing involved. I don't want to see footprints, ideally. March is a lot better than December, for me, but I don’t target hatchery fish much after the stream I knew lost its hatchery program. I’m...
