    A Smith River Odyssey

For those following the Smith River Question thread, I drew a Smith permit for a launch on 5.2 so I wanted to follow up with a report/ blog about the awesome experience…it’s not short but it’s a trip report 😁 Everyone in our group of 10 do not live in MT so that added some complexities when...

    Smith River Questions

As of this AM flows up to 122, guy at the shop we’re renting a couple of boats in said anything above 120 won’t be too bad. Not sure if I believe him but he said he put in @ 60 one year but he wouldn’t wish that on his worst enemy. Snow and rain today and tomorrow, thinking we’ll be good for...

    Smith River Questions

Well shit…our permit date is for next Monday. Flows are currently sitting at 95cfs, about about 300cfs below the median. Was hoping the recent warm weather would bump it but nothing…I think our best bet is show up on Monday morning and hope for the best (ie flows ~250) but have a backup plan...

    Smith River Questions

Quick question…based on the bear proofing regulations, does a bolt & nut to lock the cooler qualify? We also have an electric fence so I think that negates the lock question but I don’t want to show up and get called out for it.

    NFR Electric Truck

A couple weeks ago I was in the GM facility that is making the Hummer EV in Detroit. Pretty impressive facility. They are currently on a 2 year wait list for the vehicle. Still building the production center so all year 1 vehicles will be white only, the paint booth hasn’t been built yet...

    Smith River Questions

Quick question on rod storage…. I live in Chicago so I’ve adjusted my thought on trailering my drift boat all the way out there in the off chance flows are <350 cfs for our 5.2 launch date. Going to rent a couple of rafts for half of our group. The company we’re going through doesn’t offer...

    Smith River Questions

Quick question on some logistics…we’re all out of staters who haven’t floated the Smith before. We’ll be staying the night prior to launch in Bozeman, no other options as we have some flights getting in late. So that means not getting on the water before 10am on day 1. Based on the late-ish...

Bozeman launches new high end apparel company

I must be Missing the sarcasm…2 shirts, 2 shorts/ pants, 2 waders and 4 jackets. 50% is coming soon. Not sure I’d start a company that way but I guess the Bozeman-ites need another brand to rep.

    Smith River Questions

Will do and likewise to you. I’ll be coming from my son’s hockey tourney in MN and will require a lot of up front planning so hoping the flows are agreeable. We might be in a runoff situation and I’d rather have that than cancel due to low flows.

    Smith River Questions

I pulled one for 5/2, hoping maybe with a low snow year (although a lot can change in March and April) could play to our advantage with an earlier and less chaotic runoff…at least that’s what I’m telling myself. We’ll have folks coming from multiple states so keeping a close eye on snow levels...

Is the (Utah) Green River below Flaming Gorge dam worth a visit?

Definitely worth it, Sept will be a good time because you’ll avoid all the tubers and maybe even some of the guide traffic. If you have time, float the A section on day #1 and A/B on day #2…if you like to camp spend a night on one of the campsites on the B section. Hoppers will probably still...

    St Simon Island Guide Recommendation

Going to be down there at the end of March, plan to take my son out for the day to go after some reds. Any recommendations from folks that have spent time down there? My son is 11yrs old and a competent fly caster but he’s still a kid so looking for a guide that isn’t too harsh/ works well...
