Yes, loop a whole new leader with fly attached. Thread flyline loop thru leader loop, then thread fly and leader thru the flyline loop. I have yet to fish a fly I can't thread thru the flyline loop. Does not apply to monster sized flies.

These are many of the same folks that complain about their fly line loop being damaged by loop to loop connections. 🙃

Maxima UG is definitely stronger than the test rating. I was unable to break off a harbor seal with 12lb. Had to straight rod him in to be able to have someone cut the leader! One would think it would be difficult to break with any kind of bend in the rod. Perhaps one would up-size to...

What are you using? We haven't done this drill for awhile. I'll start: I used to use 5.5 - 6 feet of 10lb Maxima Ultragreen early in the summer, then 12lb beginning mid-August/September. Now, I just always use 12lb Ultragreen.

Coho: the Houdini class of salmon. Lots of ways to lose a salmon, but they seem to use magic and trickery to send us into befuddlement. 😟
